[09:39]
pharveyHi MichaelDaum. How's WikiFest? [09:48]
MichaelDaumcool
had some real great conversations
best I met a friend of mine that I last met 20 (twenty) years ago
he's now teaching game programming at the htw berlin
[09:48]
pharveyawesome [09:50]
MichaelDaumI learned more about docuwiki and tiki
docuwiki now recently introduced versioning of attachments ;)
docuwiki has got an interesting two level caching mechanism
first level: compute a sort of op code from wiki text; second level: cache html
alas, all of the wikitext processor is build by assembling a big regex from small regexes that have kind of priorities to expand.
so no proper parser
the other recent addition is a kind of %INCLUDE for docuwiki
they've been asking how foswiki does it and whether this is a useful thing to have in wikis ;)
[09:50]
pharveySome wikis do seem to cache a (already parsed) DOM tree of the markup [09:54]
MichaelDaumy. [09:54]
pharveycool [09:54]
MichaelDaumthat's been an idea floating around in here some time ago as well. [09:55]
pharveyfriend of mine really loves dokuwiki - though he runs with the caching turned off [09:55]
MichaelDaumlike: let plugins operate on a TOM tree instead of implementing YAP (yet another parser) like Table/EditTable/Spreadshit/AndSomeMorePlugin do each on their own.
docuwiki 1rst level cache is more of generating static instructions to be executed faster than rendering html from wikitext directly
this op code can then be used to render not only html but also anything else
[09:56]
pharveyI have toyed (briefly) with the idea of a Foswiki::DOM. Seems... possible :) [09:58]
FoswikiBothttp://trunk.foswiki.org/System/PerlDoc?module=Foswiki::DOM [ (Foswiki login) PerlDoc ] [09:58]
pharveyyes! Would love different generates to work on the output
and especially adding new syntax to WYSIWYG - would be much easier if we shared the same parser as the main renderer
[09:58]
MichaelDaumanother point about dokuwiki: they don't have sort of variables... which they would need to make transclusions parametrized which they dont have either by now [09:59]
pharveygenerators* [09:59]
MichaelDaumSven did Serializers as well [09:59]
pharveythat's for structured data - different to a WikiText DOM, I think, but certainly the lines are blurred [10:00]
MichaelDaumCDot once made a Meta.pm able to emit xml
problem with a TOM is legacy: things that dont fit into a well-formed TOM tree
similar problem like browsers having to generate a dom tree from non-well-formed html ... in a sort of standardized way
[10:00]
pharveyIn my mind... TOM is our Foswiki::Meta, structured data, META:<foo> stuff. DOM for WikiText that it might contain [10:02]
FoswikiBothttp://trunk.foswiki.org/System/PerlDoc?module=Foswiki::Meta [ (Foswiki login) PerlDoc ] [10:02]
pharveyConfluence, MediaWiki, XWiki etc. seem able to produce reliable DOM representation from wikitext [10:03]
MichaelDaumseparate TOMs/DOMs for structured and wikitext? hm, why that. [10:04]
pharveyIt's much easier if you're not mixing <html>
separate - well, I guess because it's separate at the moment. And also because a lot of wiki content is dynamic. How do you sensibly query a topic's WikIText unless you expand all the macros in context?
[10:04]
MichaelDaumtables for one would become a magnitude more usefull if represented properly ...
nother thing: text sections/chapters/paragraphs
or headlines
take text paragraphs: representing them properly would improve html output too...required for proper typography
besides making sectional edit more bugfree
[10:05]
pharveyI'm not debating the need to generate HTML from a DOM instead of dumb regexes. I am just concerned that pushing the entirety of a DOM that is rich enough to express all the formatting possibilities, actually complicates the task of sensibly querying and re-using structured data... or at least... structured data deserves to be separated from unstructured data... or something :) [10:08]
MichaelDaummaybe
you are right: having a proper TOM for already structured data is much easier compared to bringing in structure for now unstructured bits as well
[10:08]
pharveywould be nice to have a SEARCH{type="xquery" tho :) [10:09]
MichaelDaumxquery ... *sigh*
there's no xquery library able to hook in an acl checker into the parser&indexer
[10:09]
pharveyI vaguely recall studying eXist and coming to that conclusion too :/ [10:11]
MichaelDaumlet alone mark logic ... /me admiring this awesome pile of software [10:11]
pharveyI briefly tried to understand its scope & possibilities. What is your impression? [10:12]
MichaelDaum( http://www.marklogic.com/ )
impression about marklogic?
[10:12]
pharveypharvey made a slightly unflattering remark about MongoDB on a MarkLogic blog, and 10gen responded with a suggestion for us to try :)
yeah
have you been using it?
[10:13]
MichaelDaumvery cool stuff - I like the approach to reduce application programming plus text processing all one laguage: xquery
just toying around with a private install
eXist is a strange community ... not that we aren't strange. yet they are even more exotes working in a sort of closed bubble.
marklogic is closed software too but way more quality software. eXist sometimes feels quite alpha
eXist is closed even though open source in terms of mindset ... that was my impression talking to them about early binding acl checks
[10:14]
pharveyyeah.
one of our main data sources is run by an eXist DB though. The service seems to work okay
[10:17]
MichaelDaum[on] just for the logs: I feel deep respect for any such open source projects. [10:18]
pharveycan be slow if you ask something difficult of it tho :) [10:18]
MichaelDaumMichaelDaum can imagine your guys trying out everything db-ish for their complicated data :)
o shit
