WhoWhatWhen
SvenDowideiti come from a time when we set up one server per service
so that a HW death only took out one thing
consolidation just makes me think 'don't bother coming to work this week, we lost a HD'
[00:00]
kip3fI admit, I've been lucky so far with harddrives. But you never know ... [00:01]
SvenDowideity, me too
but with >15 years of email on this server, and heaps of photo's
i'm starting to think i'm not precious enough
[00:01]
gac410SvenDowideit: Now that I understand configure a *small* bit. ... it's a one-line change to configure and main.tmpl to add an override checkbox that allows change password without dummy changes. [00:01]
SvenDowideiti now spend less on notebooks than on storage
gac410, giggle
aka - love your work
[00:01]
gac410That sitll doesn't fix the extensions dead-end though [00:02]
SvenDowideitthats easy - seriously, just disable the button [00:02]
kip3fI bet you don't hold a candle to Stephen Wolfram
http://blog.stephenwolfram.com/2012/03/the-personal-analytics-of-my-life/
[00:02]
SvenDowideitand change the message to say 'set the pwd mupty'
no, i don't
i'm too lazy
and i deleted all my email from when i was at uni
giggle
mmm, the git way of using terminals
open one for a task, close it when done
[00:03]
gac410Sven. How about a 2nd Sanity message - p>Configure does not have a password set. Before doing anything else, access the password dialog by selecting
the <code>Change password</code> checkbox next to the Save changes button in the lower right of the screen
and set a password.</p>
[00:08]
SvenDowideiti don't even know what a sanity message is
if a user goes to configure with one thing on their mind
(installing XXXPlugin)
the're not reading, they're going straight to click on the button
and that button is really well hidden in text that they don't read
[00:08]
gac410That's the orange box a the top that says warning [00:09]
SvenDowideitlol
configure has too much text, so the chances of it being read is?
SvenDowideit wants to know - is it that hard to disable the button?
[00:09]
gac410I'm trying to compromise for 1.1.5 with you. For me.... YES [00:10]
SvenDowideitor CSS hide everythign? [00:10]
gac410And disabling the button still doesn't help the user set the password [00:10]
SvenDowideitif we want to maximise the 'help' option with minimum work, use css to hide the rest of the UI
just say 'set pwd dammit'
tis also just a 3 liner - the hard thing is where to put the lines :)
[00:10]
gac410You don't understand. I spent all day rewriting the configure auth stuff because to M ... it's easier than trying to tackle CSS or JS. :P [00:11]
SvenDowideitok, yes, i don't understand :) [00:12]
gac410er. (that was to ME it's easier ...) [00:12]
SvenDowideitcss is declaritive programming, its tre-cool :p

[00:12]
gac410whenever I touch CSS it go into a rat-hole of developer toolbar trying to trace class inheritance with nothing working and loosing hair. [00:13]
SvenDowideitoh, don't do that :)
see crawford - hair is optional!
nm - i have to lick this pre-nested web linking thing yesterday first :(
[00:13]
gac410SvenDowideit: I've checked in my minimal fix for 1.1.5. If you want to disable the buttons, need to disable the Email test button and Extension installer button. [00:28]
SvenDowideitgac410, coolieo - if i'm lucky i'll poke it this arvo

SvenDowideiti still am unconvinced about the crazed lazyload plugin code thing
but cdot and micha hack plugins to bitz as though its the only way
[00:43]
gac410I think it only makes sense if the .. plugin is complex, and seldom invoked. [00:43]
SvenDowideitthus producing 3 layers of lazyloading misdirection
not really
it'd make more sense for the core to do it

[00:43]
gac410IMO the bigger issue is monkey patching core. That's just so nasty. [00:44]

JulianLevensMichaelDaum: I would assume that the advantage of PlainFileStoreContrib is simplicity and possibly performance. When querying across topic revisions I would think could be a significant performance gain. [08:24]
With VDBI, I'll be implementing sparse-versioning (very very roughly akin to RCS), but as that's DBMS backed should still perform well. I have considered an alternative where I do full versioning (more like !PlainFileStore in this case), for maximum performance across versions, but also with storage trade-offs. [08:29]
CDotJulianLevens: I haven't run any benchmarks. My main goal was to try and simplify the store, get as close to basics as possible
the idea being that the foundation thus uncovered could be used for more sophisticated stores
CDot has never bought into the "handler per file" approach taken by the RCS stores
[08:29]
JulianLevensCDot: y, I'm guessing about performance, and it may only really gain across multiple revisions [08:30]
***ChanServ sets mode: +o MichaelDaum_ [08:31]
CDotThere are inevitable limits to it; for example, filesystem limits on number of files per directory [08:31]
JulianLevensy, I remember the original Acorn ADFS which had a limit of 77 files per directory [08:32]
MichaelDaumdepends on how older revision txts are stored: when they are all in a data/Web/Topic/_revs/ directory ... things could work out easy wrt filesystem limits [08:36]
CDotMichaelDaum: If someone recodes the RcsLite handler to work without loading all possible revs of a topic, then the PlainFileStoreContrib has no "role" - which is why I didn;t release it. I see it as an experiment, more than anything. [08:36]
MichaelDaumya
fair enuf
though even a fixed RcsLite isnt exactly what I'd call a breakthru
[08:36]
CDotright
I was also looking at integrating prefs more closely into the store, which has more promise. But I don't have uch time to work on it :-(
[08:37]
MichaelDaum... removing Gilmar's pref magic? [08:38]
CDotyes
in the best traditions of medieval times, "if you don't understand it, then kill it" :-)
[08:39]
MichaelDaumthats a scary piece of code isntit
MichaelDaum even more scared by the _people_ that write brilliant code I dont understand by all means
[08:39]
JulianLevensCDot: With VDBI I've been thinking how to priovide faster access to prefs [08:50]
flexibeastWhen one installs SubscribePlugin, and enables it for a given web in both configure and in the site preferences, is a 'Subscribe' button supposed to appear near the 'Edit' and 'Attach' buttons on a topic page?
The templates suggest so, but i'm not seeing it ....
[08:51]
JulianLevensI'm keeping it simple. Scan topic when saved for any preferences. Take last one with same name, or META:PREF as definitive. Then store that in a separate table
It sounds like you have something else in mind
MichaelDaum: I've really love to see examples of the META:DATA you generate with your MetaDataPlugin. I've read through the code, and as expected nothing should break VDBI. However, as I've considered my own multiple dataform solutions, it would be good to contrast and compare and seeing the META is the easiest way for me
[08:51]
MichaelDaumJulianLevens, yes. got that in my inbox ... while I am still fighting my way down towards a manageable amount of unanswered mails
I will add a simple example app to MetaDataPlugin
that does time tracking, keeping all effort records in a single topic.
[08:56]
JulianLevensOK, I look forward to seeing it [08:57]
MichaelDaumMetaDataPlugin basically boils down all of a DataForm's formfield into one META:... line
like %META:EFFORT{name="..." from="..." to="..."}%
with its format being defined the usual DataForm way
[08:58]

SvenDowideitneeds to change to use the 1.1.0 added TMPL:PREV rather than hardcoding things [12:32]
AlexisHazellSvenDowideit: Don't care, but off the top of my head, would expect 'Discuss' button to be left of 'Edit' button, 'Subscribe' to be right of 'Attach' button. [12:32]
MichaelDaumgac410, argh, thats a bug in configure [12:32]
SvenDowideitTMPL:DEF{topicactionbuttons}%TMPL:P{"talktopicaction"}%%TMPL:P{sep}%TMPL:PREV%%TMPL:END%
and if i've spelt that right, you should get whatever pattern skin gives you, plus the talky on the left side
re-arranging will be torrid
mmm, similar thing for %TMPL:DEF{"top:toolbarbuttons"}%
%TMPL:DEF{"top:toolbarbuttons"}%%TMPL:P{"talktopicaction"}%%TMPL:PREV%%TMPL:END%
[12:32]
AlexisHazellWait, where are you adding this? view.talk.tmpl? [12:34]
SvenDowideiti wonder if TMPL:PREV is the right name, and if there's docco [12:34]
gac410MichaelDaum: I think trunk installs with pseudo-install, doesn't it? [12:34]
MichaelDaumdunno [12:35]
gac410yes it does. So no config needed, I don't think. [12:35]
SvenDowideithttp://foswiki.org/System/SkinTemplates#How_Template_Directives_Work
AlexisHazell, if it works, feel free to make a task and commit to TalkContrib :)
if not, well, we'll talk tomorrow or sommat
[12:35]
MichaelDaumgac410, how comes all jquery plugin modules are enabled in LocalSite.cfg? [12:35]
AlexisHazellWell, the thing is, view.talk.tmpl is already set up to display a button. [12:36]
SvenDowideity, but its hardcoded so blows away the rest [12:36]
gac410No idea. I never have had to touch configure on trunk I don't think. [12:36]
AlexisHazellThe problem is, if i enable the 'talk' skin, it makes the 'Subscribe' button disappear.
Hm.
[12:36]
SvenDowideitwhereas TMPL:PREV will use what is there in view.pattern.tmpl [12:36]
MichaelDaumconfigure probably will remain alien to me 4ever [12:37]
SvenDowideitas its the _previous_ definition of that TMPL:DEF [12:37]
gac410What do you need changed again. I'm geting lost in the scrollback [12:37]
SvenDowideitSvenDowideit runs away :) [12:37]
AlexisHazellSvenDowideit: Hm .... okay, think i need to sleep on that. Thank you, will check it out properly in the morn. :-) [12:37]
gac410MichaelDaum: under JQuery extra plugins {JQueryPlugin}{Plugins}{NatEdit}{Enabled} is set, and {module} is set to Foswiki::Plugins::NatEditPlugin::NATEDIT [12:41]
FoswikiBothttp://trunk.foswiki.org/System/PerlDoc?module=Foswiki::Plugins::NatEditPlugin::NATEDIT [12:41]
MichaelDaumcorrect [12:42]
gac410I checked the configure.log, and it was never changed by configure.
So probably something pseudoinstall did? I don't know.
[12:42]
MichaelDaumumpf. well your configure+save immediately cured the problem ... [12:42]
gac410hm. Then configure is not logging some changes :( [12:43]
MichaelDaumI like that [12:43]
gac410and *that's* not good. [12:43]
AlexisHazellSvenDowideit: Couldn't help myself, tried changing view.talk.tmpl now - your suggestion worked, thanks. :-) Will tomorrow create a task, commit a patch. [12:43]
gac410Is NatEditPlugin a JQuery module, or should it also be showing up on the pseudo-installed list of Extensions. [12:45]

FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item11648 [ Item11648: Add NatEditPlugin to core Add NatEditPlugin to core Add NatEditPlugin to the core ] [12:45]
MichaelDaumgac410, yes NatEdit is a proper jquery module, though located in a different plugin (not part of JQueryPlugin directly)
there are a couple of extensions that integrate that way
[12:48]
gac410Okay ... Something strange going on with trunk configure "FindInstallExtensions. NatEditPlugin is not listed as pseudo-installed. [12:50]
MichaelDaumnot even after Crawford's last checkin to Foswiki.spec? [12:51]
gac410no. Works fine on my local checkout. Pseudo-intall picked it right up and configure shows it.
gac410 wonders ... did CDot edit something on f.o or does the trunk autorun of pseudo-install do something different.
hm. It's symlinked correctly.
The FindInstallExtensions dialog totally omits NatEdit. Not listed as pseudo-installed or as a candidtate to install either.
[12:51]
CDotgac410: not that I'm aware of [13:01]
gac410Something strange then. Everything looks normal for me locally - NatEditPlugin is listed as Pseudo installed by FindMoreExtensions. But is omitted on trunk.foswiki.org
And configure must not report the merges from Spec files as changes ... not sure if I like that. Thinks should not just magically and silently change after a bin/configure save cycle with no changes to save.
[13:02]
CDotit's enabled in LSC [13:03]
gac410Yes - everything is fine. Except it doesn't show up in FindMoreExtensions on trunk.foswiki.org
And the Jquery module was missing from the config until I ran a save cycle through configure ... in which nothing was reported as changed except for the unrelated setting I tweaked.
[13:04]
CDothum... [13:05]
gac410My guess is that when configure merges a plugin Config.spec default settings into LocalSite.cfg ... those additions are not detected as changes.
Which is probably good for the "initial install" where there would be dozens of settings merged. But after adding a plugin like this it's darn confusing.
So once Configure has finished the "initial setup", then any Config.spec change needs to be detected for save, and logged.
[13:06]
........... (idle for 54mn)
CDotconfigure should not be run on t.f.o, should it? I thought it was manual + pseudo-installed [14:03]
Babaron t.f.o, for sure not
it's all automatic by a script written by a certain Crawford
s/automatic/automated/
[14:05]
CDotok, so "manual" means "by my hand" [14:09]
gac410Hm... Then something is missing Why did I have to run configure and do a "dummy save" to fix the JQuery plugin for NatEditPlugin [14:09]
CDotpossibly because pseudo-install doesn't install all config.spec options? or one needs to run thorugh a checker?
i.e. dunno
[14:10]

sauceis anyone available to help me figure out why i can't get foswiki connected to my company's active directory? i'm not a noob by any means, i've configured many apps for AD. i'm definitely missing something here though [14:27]
gac410MichaelDaum: I tried to help a couple of days ago http://irclogs.foswiki.org/bin/irclogger_log/foswiki?date=2012-03-23,Fri&sel=211#l207 didn't get anywhere though. [14:32]

SOAB i got it working, but with an OpenLDAP server. not with AD. at least i know it works now and i am doing something else wrong
:)
[14:53]
gac410: i figured it out. the username is case sensitive :( [15:02]
gac410Great. Ah... yes there are actually some tasks / proposals to add a case-insensitive option. If you could, please add your results to the support question. I think you found one that you comment on? [15:03]

saucehey is there like pre-built foswiki Webs that I can import and edit to my liking? [19:00]
Babarpre-built webs for what?
there are foswiki Applications, which would be kind of what you're asking, but... dunno what padraig did with them :)
[19:06]
saucewell, i see people know how to make foswiki look really good but i don't know if i have the time or the dedication to do it, so i was wondering if there are like prebuilt "themes" or something?
i'll probably just hand it off to someone on my team to fix up but before i give it to them, i was wondering
[19:10]
Babarthere are a few skins
but most of the skinning nowadays is done in CSS
and a few very basic customization, explained in ... Foswiki:System/PatternSkinCustomization iirc
[19:13]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/System/PatternSkinCustomization [ PatternSkinCustomization ] [19:14]
Babarwahou, got it right :) [19:15]
saucei know i'm not much of a developer though, you know what i mean? i'm gonna take a look at that link though [19:17]
...................... (idle for 1h46mn)
is foswiki meant for web developers/CMS developers/etc? i'm a sysadmin looking to improve documentation within the department, foswiki seems really complicated for me [21:03]
Babarsauce: if you want to improve documentation, then the tool isn't really the issue :) All you want is that it's easy to use, and don't get in the way
which Foswiki can totally do, if you let it
I'm a sysadmin, and we use Foswiki (nah, it's still this old crap of (tm)wiki, but hey, same difference) to share knowledge. It quickly gets messy, but when people get used to it, it's very powerful
[21:13]
saucemy old job we used Confluence and it wasn't this difficult at all. there was a WYSIWYG editor with macros to use and everything [21:16]
Babarsure. if you want to run some java, and pay the price, Confluence can be great.
Babar hated it everytime he had to use it, but hey, I hate Java
[21:17]
sauceno i don't want confluence, trust me
i was just expecting to jump right into foswiki the way i jumped right into confluence
[21:18]
Babarand what don't you like about the WYSIWYG editor in Foswiki
?
[21:18]
saucei dunno something is missing. like, the way to create computer code boxes (pre formatted fixed width text). and like "WARNING" icons and stupid crap like that
also i'm having trouble figuring out how to create a topic, and then subtopics of that
i've only been using it for a day, i will give it more time
[21:19]
Babarsubtopics... hierarchy is mostly done with "parents"
usually, the easiest is you put a link to the sub topic in the parent topic
and then you click it to create/edit the sub
[21:20]
sauceok good, i have to link each subtopic? no way to dynamically list all subtopics? [21:21]
Babarto create code boxes, you have several ways, but the easiest is to wrap it in verbatim or pre blocks
oh, you can dynamically link many things
[21:21]
saucedo <pre> in the HTML editor right? [21:22]
Babarbut then it gets just a little bit more complex
you do pre in any editor, yes
[21:22]
saucehow much more complex. i'm ok with a little complex [21:22]
Babarby more complex I mean, you just need "something" to glue it together
easiest could be some common prefix in the topic name
[21:22]
sauceok i can do a prefix, then what [21:23]
Babarthen you can simply make a %SEARCH{ "Prefix.*" web="..." exclude="..." ... }% [21:23]
saucei see [21:23]
Babarand you can format it the way you want [21:23]
sauceeasy enough [21:24]
BabarFoswiki:System/VarSEARCH should explain how [21:24]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/System/VarSEARCH [ VarSEARCH ] [21:24]
saucewhat if i had "TopicA" with a bunch of topics underneath that (topicA is a subtopic of MainWeb). there is no way to list all subtopics of TopicA? [21:24]
Babaryou could then create something more complex, by attaching DataForms, and querying them
you can list all topics whose parent is TopicA
[21:24]
saucei found docs on %TOPICLIST but it was really really difficult to make it work [21:25]
Babarhttp://foswiki.org/System/QuerySearch#Search_examples
first example is what you're looking for, if I got you right
[21:25]
sauceah that looks good
i'm gonna take a look at that thank you
eventually, i would like to use this to create a "Tree" like view
with all of my topics
in the main web or something
[21:26]
Babarthere are plugins doing that :) [21:26]
saucesince you brought that up, why can't i find a list of plugins and their documentation? i see lots of plugins when doing "apt-cache search foswiki" [21:27]
Babarand all of them should have links pointing to their topic
Foswiki:Extensions
[21:28]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Extensions [ WebHome ] [21:28]
sauceah, i was googling foswiki plugins
i see now
this is plenty of info for day one
thanks for all the help
[21:28]
Babarhttp://foswiki.org/Extensions/TreePlugin [21:30]
saucei was just looking at that [21:30]
Babarthe plugin I was thinking about [21:30]
