gac410pharvey, also I've just checked in a big change to link handling in Wysiwyg. Probably needs some testing for corner cases. Unit tests updated. [01:49]
Hm... I just committed some untidy stuff using git svn. I've since tidied it, but shouldn't the commit exit have stopped me. Or are git users forgiven :) [01:56]

Going back to 1.1.4, the lines are still wrapped together but with a space between each wrapped element.
This white space handling code is really difficult. For another day.

greg4567Newbie trying to configure first foswiki on a gentoo server. I get plain text html pages instead of a nicely formatted foswiki webpages (except for the configure page with has the cute little foswiki logo in the upper left and proper formatting on the page). On the configure page, I have 2 warnings and no errors. I can navigate on my own foswiki site using the "Installation Guide Part 2" and its links, but the pages are plain text
html in the browser. Any ideas?
the errors relate to password modules that I have not installed because one is "mased" ie not approved by gentoo and the other is not available.
on irc is there a way to review the past comments?
like the last few minutes or hours?
[04:55]
As Roseanne Roseannadanna might say, ``never mind''. Found the archives.
Still need answer to the above about plain text html though.
[05:09]

welcome kip3f [05:27]
kip3fhi [05:28]
greg4567Newbie here with a question. [05:28]
kip3fwhat do you mean by "plain text html" [05:29]
greg4567I set up my first foswiki server. Config page has proper formatting, but the other pages are plain text html. Any thought about what I am doing wrong?
um. Things are not in columns, and properly formatted. It is "Sort of" like looking at a plain text html file, but the links work.
the browser is reading it "linearly". The Foswiki nor any other graphics are displayed, but they are displayed on the configure page.
the foswiki logo, that is, is displayed.
[05:29]
kip3fI've seen foswiki installs that don't have the right configuration for attachments, it sounds sort of like what you are describing
I would start with that ... getting images to display
[05:32]
greg4567I thought it was mod_perl related, but that seems to be installed properly. I am on gentoo server and I re-emerged it.
No erros
err, errors
[05:33]
kip3fare you using apache config file?
(i.e. not .htaccess)
[05:33]
greg4567the way gentoo does it is apache config, and it "includes" foswiki and virtual host config files.
let me check .htaccess
not sure
[05:34]
kip3fIf you see that it is including a foswiki .conf file, then it's not using .htaccess
it seems that /pub links are not working
which are used to display images
[05:35]
greg4567httpd.conf includes ``.../vhosts.d/*.conf'', which is a directory containing my ``foswiki.conf'' file
let me check the pub config on foswiki
[05:38]
kip3ffor example, on foswiki.org this image works:
http://foswiki.org/pub/System/FamFamFamSilkIcons/pencil.png
can you try the corresponding URL on your site
see if it gives you a 404 error, 500 error
[05:39]
greg4567cool -- progress maybe, I see a pencil image
on configure page for general path -- ``{PubDir} required'' I have ``/var/www/foswiki/pub''
[05:41]
kip3fIf you can see the pencil icon on your wiki, then attachments are configured OK [05:42]
greg4567what does the following mean when I click the ``i'' icon for info. File checking limit 5000 reached, checking stopped - see expert options
Attachments store (file path, not URL), must match /foswiki/pub e.g. /usr/local/foswiki/pub
[05:43]
kip3fI'm really not sure what your symptoms are, then. Can you post a screenshot - you could upload to foswiki.org sandbox [05:43]
greg4567screenshot of config page? or more likely the other pages that display improperly, right? [05:44]
kip3fof the pages that display improperly [05:44]
greg4567ok [05:44]
kip3fThe configure page has an option to display expert settings. For the file checking - it checked 5000 files to confirm permissions were correct and then stopped there [05:45]
greg4567does sandbox accept png format or need jpg conversion? [05:46]
kip3f.png should be fine [05:46]
CDotgreg4567: the "File checking limit" refers to file permissions on the server. This need not be a problem, unless the web server user is denied access to the listed files. [05:47]
greg4567"unless the web server user is
denied access to the listed files" ?
[05:48]
kip3fyou verified that this is not your problem
by testing the pencil.png URL on your site
... right?
[05:49]
greg4567don't know. I did the pencil image and it showed up, so I was not denied access. I am little confused. [05:50]
kip3fOK this URL on foswiki.org
http://foswiki.org/pub/System/FamFamFamSilkIcons/pencil.png
[05:50]
greg4567I am at foswiki.org but d not see the sandbox, sorry [05:50]
kip3fworks. Can you replace the beginning of that URL with the beginning of the URL for your new site
and see if you can see pencil.png
this is to test attachments
[05:51]
greg4567did that, [my local lan gentoo server ip]/pub/System/FamFamFamSilkIcons/pencil.png, gives me a pencil image [05:52]
kip3fok good
Here is the sandbox:
http://foswiki.org/Sandbox/WebHome
[05:53]
greg4567just found it
I am new to everything apparently. Do I create a new topic?
[05:53]
kip3fYes you can just click the button to "Create TestTopic###" [05:55]
greg4567I have to create an account -- hold up [05:55]
.... (idle for 17mn)
I am moving up in the world, I am now an official foswiki registered user.

kip3fhttp://foswiki.org/pub/Sandbox/TestTopic133305/InstallationGuidePart2__System__Foswiki_1336196732605.png [06:16]
greg4567yup. that's it
I got that page by clicking on a config page that was properly formatted with the foswiki logo, etc.
[06:16]
kip3fso you are saying that you could view one page, and it was properly formatted. And then THIS page was not? [06:19]
greg4567BTW -- I was chatting with gac410 (I think that is right) a few days ago. I made a mistake. Installed the foswiki in a /home directory. After screwing around with that for a while, I moved it to "var/www/foswiki" with a "mv -r command". Actually it was "mv" as in this gentoo the "-r" was apparently implied. [06:20]
kip3fwas the first page the configure script (/bin/configure)? [06:20]
greg4567I am uploading /bin/config in a second
configure page there now
see, it is formatted as expected
[06:21]
kip3fwell, /bin/configure is not rendered in the same way as normal foswiki pages. [06:25]
greg4567really? I am on old firefox.
This old mac (10.4 Tiger) has been orphaned by Apple.
[06:26]
kip3fwhat I mean is, /bin/configure is a 'standalone' web page. It doesn't use the normal foswiki mechanisms for generating pages
because it's used for administration
can you try adding "?skin=pattern" to the end of the URL
[06:27]
greg4567I guess that gets to where I need to know -- what is the foswiki mechanism for generating pages?
mod_perl?
I am clueless as to how foswiki (or any wiki) works.
add "?skin=pattern" to the end of the failing page or the config page?
[06:28]
kip3fthe failing page [06:30]
greg4567weird, I got the exact same page with ?skin=pattern" attached"
page is [serverip]/foswiki/bin/view/System/InstallationGuidePart2?skin=pattern
[06:32]
kip3fgreg4567 - search for "rendering pipeline" in this page: http://foswiki.org/Development/TechnicalOverview [06:32]
greg4567maybe I have a cgi problem to check in the config files or permissions thereto
the rendering pipeline is a good hint though. Thanks.
[06:36]
kip3fThat "technicalOverview" page goes deep into the internals, just some info about how foswiki works. It's probably not where you should be looking to debug your problem [06:38]
greg4567BTW I see "databases" in the main features in the site you pointed to, but I thought that foswiki did not depend upon databases. Does foswiki use or interface with postgresql by any chance? This would be a big bonus to me. [06:39]
kip3fHere is a public website that shows what foswiki looks like "out of the box"
https://hep.pa.msu.edu/wiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome
it seems that there is something wrong with your "skins"
I'm not really sure what the next steps should be for debugging your problem, sorry
[06:39]
greg4567wouldn't you agree that my config page looks somewhat similar to the "out of the box" page you suggested? https://hep.pa.msu.edu/wiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome
Does it not surprise you that my config page renders correctly but the other pages do not?
[06:40]
kip3fno
the config page rendering is a totally separate process then other page rendering
because it's a tool for administration
you should compare that page with [your site URL]/Main/WebHome
[06:41]
greg4567okay, I thought that was the key to the solution because the logo was picked up by the config page but not by the other non-formatted pages. [06:43]
kip3fsorry greg I have to go
sorry I couldn't help you more
[06:43]
greg4567you did help, thanks
btw, my foswiki.main/webhome shows Not Found
The requested URL /foswiki/Main/WebHome was not found on this server.
permissions or path problem maybe
thanks

gac410CDot gone, pharvey gone :( Wysiwyg eating newlines I suspect might be a tmce interoperation issue. The special newline protecting spans are not present in the TMCE html.
Babar, did you see my tidy question? I did a git svn commit, and some untidy stuff went through okay. Or have you not turned on the failure mode
[15:59]
Babarhum... it's supposed to be turned on
but... I haven't tested it
I mean, I unit tested it manually, but never tested the full chain
[16:00]
gac410Foswikirev:14688 vs. Foswikirev:14689 [16:01]
FoswikiBothttp://trac.foswiki.org/changeset/14688 [ Changeset 14688 – Foswiki ] http://trac.foswiki.org/changeset/14689 [ Changeset 14689 – Foswiki ] [16:01]
gac410I think 14688 should have been rejected. [16:02]
It appears that TMCE filters out empty spans. So the span: <span class="WYSIWYG_HIDDENWHITESPACE" style="{encoded: 'n'};"> </span> is removed. ... adding any character other than blank lets it work. [16:07]
Changing the protection to <span class="WYSIWYG_HIDDENWHITESPACE" style="{encoded: 'n'};">&nbsp;</span> ... seems to have it behave quite a bit better. Except for the 14 broken unit tests. [16:18]

ArthurClemensshowing dates in your local time is such a basic thing that it should not be made hard to do that [21:05]
gac410I agree. Do we have / needs a locale for each logged in user?
well wrong word? timezone?

ArthurClemensI have to read up on using locales for datetimes
currently I've implemented rendering using {DefaultDateTimeFormat}

this is a tremendous amount of CPAN files in DateTime Locale and Timezone directories: 468 + 435 files
it will make MANIFEST almost twice as long
