foswiki_irc8hi I want to share a wiki website over internet with my Virtual assistant in phillipines but also make the info in the wiki private from internet search engines an public view
i have latest foswiki version
[11:02]
....................................... (idle for 3h10mn)
dj_segfaultHi. I thought there was a way to hide a subwiki from the list of wikis on the left, but I'm looking in WebPreferences and not seeing it. [14:12]
gac410I think if the web is not authorized to the current user, it will be excluded. [14:13]
dj_segfaultHm. I want people to be able to get to them by links, but not appear there. Is there a way to reorder the webs on that list on the left? [14:20]
gac410For busier sites it's usually recommended to drop the weblist altogether and just build a static list. Searching and auth-checking every web can be quite time consuming and slows down every page hit. [14:22]
dj_segfaultAh. I see your point. But I would need to somehow do that anyway since several webs and subwebs are only accessible to some users.
But you're right that it wouldn't happen on every page load though if I did a site map landing page
I assume there's some wiki way of only showing something if the person has auth to it.
[14:25]
gac410Hm. The ManagingWebs web creator has an option to exclude from the weblist.
I think it's the NOSEARCHALL parameter.
[14:27]
dj_segfaultI knew I saw it somewhere!!! But these webs are already created.
Is that weblist a static thing that gets updated when you add a web? if that's the case I can just edit it
[14:28]
gac410It's in WebPreferences. But it's confusing. I'm looking for it now.
Set NOSEARCHALL = if set to on, this web will be exclude web from a global search
Which is slightly misleading. If set to *any* non-blank, then the web will be excluded, iirc.
[14:29]
dj_segfaultIt doesn't remove it from that list on the left, though. [14:31]
gac410:( Its supposed to if it uses the WEBLIST macro.
$filter may also contain the word 'public' which will further filter webs on whether NOSEARCHALL is specified for them or not.
Maybe you need to tweak the WEBLIST macro to specify public
AH.... If you are logged in as admin, then filtering doesn't happen
[14:32]
dj_segfaultOK, I have a mortal user. Lemme try that. Good catch
That user is not authed on any of those webs, I'll have to go back to admin and add him
[14:34]
gac410A handy trick is to add your own id to ALLOWTOPICCHANGE to the AdminGroup. Then you can easily add or remove yourself from the group [14:39]
dj_segfaultMy login that I normally use is. DavidKramer is in admin group, and the other account is DavidKramerMortal that I use for testing these kinds of things.
OK< I see it works now. Thanks!
dj_segfault gets smart and opens up a different browser to log in with two accounts at the same time
[14:40]
gac410dj_segfault: See Foswiki:Development/ImplementAddMeToAdminButton for some javascript. you can put that in your left bar, and use it to toggle admin rights off & on. [14:45]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Development/ImplementAddMeToAdminButton [ ImplementAddMeToAdminButton ] [14:45]
dj_segfaultdj_segfault RTFMing [14:47]
Putting on my Agile Evangelist hat, can you explain AcceptedBy14DayRule? Does that mean if nobody comes up with a valid reason to not do something, by default it's approved? [14:53]
gac410Correct.
If interested, track the web changes for Development. Anyone is free to raise an objection to new proposals during the 14 day period.
If objection cannot be resolved by further discussion or changes, then either the proposal languishes/dies, or can be proposed for a community vote.
Essentially raising a concern "stops the clock".
[14:53]
dj_segfaultInteresting. I'm on the Board of http://www.agilenewengland.org (we use Foswiki for our intranet/knowledgebase and coordinate all our activities with it) and we occasionally have trouble closing decisions. that would be a good option. I'll propose it. Thanks. [14:59]
foswiki_irc1hi I want to share a wiki website over internet also make the info in the wiki private from internet search engines an public view i have latest foswiki version [15:00]
gac410foswiki_irc1: if you want it truly private, then you should use https: for your web server configuration. [15:00]
foswiki_irc1ok i can do that
what about logins and search engines will it be private from them?
[15:01]
gac410And use Apache auth, require login to have any access. [15:02]
dj_segfaultfoswiki_irc1: Putting it on https alone won't make the website inaccessible to others. That just prevents "eavesdroppers" You need to combine that with some authentication setup. [15:02]
foswiki_irc1so use apahce auth and 'require login' is enough [15:03]
dj_segfaultWhat gac410 said. If you're not adding and removing users a lot then Apache auth over https is the best option. If you want to use Foswiki's authentication you'll have to set most of the webs as only accessible by logged in users
Though there must be some open source website tool you can install to admin apache auth files
[15:03]
gac410Actually the Foswiki HtpasswdUser module will maintain your apache password file just fine. [15:05]
dj_segfaultOOOOOOHHHH! I didn't realize that. I'll look into that. Foswiki auth is working for me, but maybe for my home server's wiki [15:06]
foswiki_irc1there will be only few users an wont change much [15:06]
gac410It's designed / intended to be compatible. Works with either htpasswd or htdigest type files. [15:07]
dj_segfaultI've had questions about blocking more content from WikiGuest, especially in formation on users, but I've been afraid to ask because I'm pretty sure the answer will be painful. [15:07]
foswiki_irc1so thee is a module in foswiki that will update the config in apache?
or are they entirely separate authentication mechanisms?
[15:07]
gac410The foswiki HtPasswdUser file will maintain a password file that is compatible with many Apache forms of authentication.
So you can use Foswiki User Registration tools, but let Apache manage the login, using the same password file.
[15:08]
foswiki_irc1ah ok that is interesting [15:08]
dj_segfaultI love properly layered software with interfaces and abstractions ;) [15:09]
gac410Sometimes we get lucky :)
(not really... there are a lot of skilled sw engineers involved. )
[15:09]
dj_segfaultLucky happens a lot more often if you're good [15:10]
foswiki_irc1ok now i have to put this gear together :) thanks guys:) [15:10]
dj_segfaultNP.
One of my major reasons for going with Foswiki is the IRC channel and other support vectors
[15:10]
gac410foswiki_irc1: Foswiki:Support.ApacheConfigGenerator can generate an apache login type configuratino. But doesn't do the https / ssl pieces [15:11]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support.ApacheConfigGenerator [ ApacheConfigGenerator ] [15:11]
dj_segfaultgac410: Jumping back to http://foswiki.org/Development/ImplementAddMeToAdminButton for a sec, what prevents any logged in user from becoming an admin? If its job is to add you to AdminGroup if you're not in there already and remove you from Admin group if you're not, then what prevents anyone from pressing the Add button? [15:14]
foswiki_irc1thats useful i tihnk i remember seeing osmething like that before in twiki [15:14]
dj_segfaultgac410: Thanks for your help gotta go. [15:21]
foswiki_irc1thanks bye [15:21]
gac410dj_segfault: (for the logs). The user needs permission to change the AdminGroup topic. Consider the "ALLOWTOPICCHANGE" setting for AdminGroup a list of *candidate* adminstrators. [15:34]
