http://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item11746 [ Item11746: General documentation task for 1.1.6 release ]
[03:22]
gac410SvenDowideit: How big a deal is it if 1.1.6 extensions have a dependency on PatchItem12225Contrib. It isn't really needed for 1.1.6, and pseudo-install complains. But incrementing the Foswiki API is rather a challenge. [03:28]
SvenDowideittbh, i recon it'd be a great idea for 1.1.6 to contain a HotFixContrib
and for new contribs to have an implicit dependency for it too
i seriously would not call it a name specifically for a particular task
[03:29]
gac410For 1.2, (API 2.4) the dependency drops away. [03:30]
SvenDowideitna, honestly, if its always there
then we can always magically hotfix anything
[03:30]
gac410Well we need that particular patch. The more general solution is to have a HotfixContrib, without any patches, and figure out a way to ship the patches solo [03:30]
SvenDowideitno, just add patches to HotfixContrib
updating that contrib would get the new patches
no reason to separate the patches from the contrib
[03:31]
gac410I suppose as long as we don't patch too often. [03:32]
SvenDowideityup [03:32]
gac410The issue is that for each contrib release, it applies ALL the patches again. (well check's MD5's to see if they apply) [03:33]
SvenDowideitand honestly, its for omg pain issues - like this one
y, which is good
as the user may have unziped a core over the top
[03:33]
gac410Yeah. I need to add one more related patch. If a dep asks for >7243 for a svn rev, it should consider 1.2 or 1.3.3 newer and not re-install the dep.
Hm. So you'd re-release PatchItem12225Contrib as HotFixContrib <?> and then change all the dep's to as for a particular version of HFC
[03:33]
SvenDowideityup
one stop solution that we can use in 5 years time when we have another really painful point
[03:35]
gac410:P Now why didn't you tell me that a few hours ago Before I build all the DEPENDENCY files. [03:36]
SvenDowideitseems to happen once a few hours
SvenDowideit did - but that was weeks ago :p
i just had the plumbers over to unblock a sewer, and now is going to go break his phoneline :/
hope i, um, return
[03:36]
gac410Have fun [03:37]
SvenDowideithum :) [03:38]

pharveyit occurs to me I should book somehwere next week to sleep for osdc. Hrm
maybe we should have a contrib called 'core', haha.
[04:46]
gac410Doesn't Sven build a FoswikiCore for his Deb packages [04:48]
pharveycan't recall [04:48]
gac410I don't understand it all, never really looked into it. But iirc, if you update a default extension, then the FoswikiCore package is installed over the Foswiki package. [04:50]
SvenDowideitoh yay, no real difference in adsl speed - still slow, but too fast to lodge a copmlaint with the telco :( [04:50]

gac410MichaelDaum: is that a new 1.1.6 error?
CDot: I assume you saw, the "bug" in tempfile() was MY bug. It requires either a DIR => or a TMPDIR => 1 to cause it to use other than current directory.
So no upstream report needed. Just a developer dope slap.
To actually **read** and comprehend the documentation..

1.1.6 Release Candidate is now running on Foswiki.org. If nobody finds any more new bugs, this will be the 1.1.6 release. [15:01]
Hm SvenDowideit Your idea of a generic patch contrib is nice but... As a separate contrib per patch, I could easily define a dependency. Must patch X before Y. As a single contrib, that needs to be built into the extension [15:13]
..... (idle for 23mn)
To keep this simple. Patches will have to be applied in numerical patch order, and for this extension, the patch will Itemxxxxx-001.patch. So that a 2nd patch to the same module can be applied in sequence. [15:36]

gac410All... I've released a new PatchFoswikiContrib It applies two patches to Foswiki version 1.1.0->1.1.5 required for compatibility with the new Version strings that will be release with the Foswiki 1.1.6 extensions.
I've tested it on Foswiki 1.1.0 and every release since, on linux. The earlier version was tested on Windows. Before we go live with 1.1.6 and release all the new extensions, this really needs some more testing.
Please code review, kick tires, and do whatever else you can do to make sure this is as bullet proof as possible. Thanks.
All extensions uploaded with 1.1.6 will have an ONLYIF dependency for this patch contrib if installed on an older foswiki.

btiffinI'm thinking of using Foswiki to herd a clowder of COBOL consultants. OpenCOBOL is the tool of choice, but I'd rather not reinvent any wiki wheel when Foswiki's wheel is already nicely round. I'd need a SyntaxHighlighter that supports COBOL sources. Enscript and Chili don't cut it (at least not yet). I found CPAN Text:VimColor, works the beauty in initial testing. How much work am I looking at to wrap a call to Text::VimColor inside
Foswiki?
[21:17]
gac410It doesn't look too difficult. Foswik is pretty extensible. I'm not sure the best way to tie it in though. [21:22]
btiffingac410: Thanks. I'm going to try starting with EmptyPlugin and see how things fare. Sadly, I actually need to focus on business and can't let the inner volunteer developer have so much fun as to steal away time. ;-) [21:28]
gac410I'm not sure there is a good way to pass a simple registered tag a large block of text. Things like DirectedGraphPlugin handle it by using start & stop tags. <dot> </dot> [21:28]
btiffinThanks for that headsup. [21:29]
gac410Or another way would be to use a named section containg the cobol, and then have a tag that "includes" it for processing. [21:29]
hmm maybe preRenderingHandler. If your code is in a <pre> or <verbatim> block, it is already pulled out, so if you use a pre block with a class for the cobol, you might be able to get at it that way. [21:35]
btiffinNow you're making me think. I was hoping for magic butterflies that fart fairies that poop out COBOL highlighters in Perl. ;-) I'll report back soon. [21:35]
gac410The empty plugin for preRenderingHandler has an example of how you would modify pre blocks
Hm... well this probably won't be very portable. It actually calls vim to do the highlighting. I figured it was just using vim rules.
Also, if you are using fastcgi or mod_perl and it actually "forks" out to vim, then that's a bad thing for performance
[21:36]
btiffinI've added COBOL to Pygments, and the pull request is pending for mainline inclusion. I was hoping to not have to pester the upstream enscript (but might anyway) or the Chili folk. [21:42]
gac410Chili has not been maintained in a long time. I think there was some thought at looking at a replacement
Item11254
[21:42]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item11254 [ Item11254: Replace chili with a generic highlighter module ] [21:45]
btiffinThanks gac410, I have some tidbits to chew through. (Or maybe, it being COBOL and all, a simple "all black all caps" conversion would suffice - kidding, OpenCOBOL is as 3rd millennium modern as Foswiki is and deserves the care and attention that all world class systems deserve). So I'll chew it over and report back. [21:51]
gac410Unfortunately I checked one promising highlighter listed in that task. COBOL is not listed, or even on the wishlist. :( (Yes I'll confess to working with COBOL at one time) [21:52]
btiffinYeah, it's never really been an 'internet generation' language. The work done is COBOL is secret by nature, so COBOL rarely gets online chatter or volunteers to help it along. Even though it is still likely the #1 language in terms of the raw count of lines of source in production.
gac410: If I can bug you for another; what about http://search.cpan.org/~octo/Apache-VimColor-2.31/VimColor.pm
[21:55]
gac410hm. I don't know much about mod_perl, but that one would need your foswiki site to be using mod_perl. Generally I use fastcgi/fcgid.
I have no idea how foswiki, a plugin-handler and mod_perl would interact.
[22:00]
btiffinThanks for the info. And now I have to go catch a bus. Thanks again for the wisdoms. [22:01]
