WhoWhatWhen
gac410Anyone looking at Foswiki:Support.Question1219 or Foswiki:Support.Question1224 - It almost like he has encountered a corrupt package? [01:08]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support.Question1219 [ Comment plugin any default type not working. ] http://foswiki.org/Support.Question1224 [ Bug after upgrading to 1.1.6 from 1.1.5 ] [01:08]
....... (idle for 31mn)
pharveydid foswiki.org change IP address in the last month or so? [01:39]
gac410Not that I've heard of. [01:39]
........ (idle for 38mn)
SvenDowideitpharvey nope
else i'd have had to change the dns
but it was upgraded
so if you're talking about ssh keys...
[02:17]
gac410SvenDowideit: Did you see the support q about dependency issues with new extensions / debian packages? [02:18]
SvenDowideitnope
SvenDowideit clearly has a brain illness - I spent my 10 minutes time yesterday installing mod_svn_dav and trying out a js browser based webdav thing
[02:18]
gac410Foswiki:Support.Question1222 [02:18]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support.Question1222 [ RPM dependency problems 1.1.5 -> 1.1.6 ("Requires: foswiki-patchfoswikicontrib" , but foswiki-patchfoswikicontrib doesn't exist) ] [02:18]
SvenDowideitwhich is almoet 100% going to be an epic fail
oh crap.
[02:18]
gac410yeah... exactly [02:19]
SvenDowideitand thats likely to be because... the vm is down
i'm turning off my machines atm, my power bill was unmanageble
and those vm's are :/
[02:19]
gac410That dep could probably just be removed. Since 1.1.6 already has the fixes that the contrib added. [02:21]
SvenDowideiti'll have to think about it - considering that the contrib won't be allowed to act [02:21]
gac410But since the ONLYIF doesn't work with enough granularity, It ends up a dep for 1.1.6 too. [02:21]
SvenDowideitas its installed via rpm
and so on
but on the other hand, i kinda like the idea
[02:21]
gac410right Doesn't really apply to debian. [02:22]
SvenDowideitand ideally would like to apply those patches when i build the rpm/deb :/
quitter :p
[02:22]
gac410right. The equiv dep would be for 1.1.6-1 for ex. [02:23]
SvenDowideitfor now, i'll just start those vm's up again (ok, that server etc) and get the contrib built even tho it is a nop
(well, i'll do it tonite - so more like in 9-10 hours
but still
its a bit painful when you realise you've used almost 4000kWh in a quarter
um, did i just say 4MWh?
so ~ 1.3MWh per month
mumble.
[02:24]
gac410wow [02:26]
SvenDowideitand that perhaps close to half of that was running too many servers 24/7 dispite their being idle
SvenDowideit may have to write a interlocking wakeonlan/suspend/hibernate solution with dependencies
so that my tv recording server can be suspended when there are no programs to record, and when the frontend boxes are suspended
and other messy things :/
worse is that i dislike having more than one server function per physical box - so that HW failures don't break everything
but that seems to be the root of my problem :)
oh well, time to return to the kids :)
[02:26]
gac410:) have fun [02:30]
SvenDowideitoh - i'd like someone to try to talk me out of someting
i'm almost convinced that an svn store is a better match for foswiki than git
due to being able to grab parts of a repo, and web&topic acl's
and svn_dav (thou cdot tells me that isn't as solid as i may like)
SvenDowideit runs for the hills having asked Babar to call him names >:}
[02:30]
gac410I don't have enough knowledge to say either way :( [02:32]
dj_segfaultSvenDowideit: Are you using MythTV?
A couple of months ago I went from one server to do everything (and I mean EVERYTHING: mail server, apache, IMAP, Subversion, two different wikis, AND mythtv) to two different servers. The combined power drain is still 180 watts most of the time
[02:33]
SvenDowideity, we use myth - but that only accounts for 2 of the um, 10 computers i have
and the frontend box is a pig - 100W for a core2duo - so it deserves replacing
[02:37]
dj_segfaultYou mean 2 back ends and 10 front ends? [02:37]
SvenDowideitno, the other 8 are for work stuff
but as they're idle for a major amount of time, its crazy
[02:38]
dj_segfaultFor a front end you can use an old fast single core chip. In fact, there's now a MythTV client for Android tablets. I have it on my hacked Nook Tablet. I can also use my Netbook with no problem [02:38]
SvenDowideitand other than the chromebox i use as a desktop xterminal
the rest are all ~2005 or older
so really not great wrt cpu to wattage
(it wasn't as obvious until we returned from switzerland and they started to increase the power prices here
mmm, that gives me hope - i have an old mac mini single core that i'd love to use for mythtv frontend
last time i tried it was too slow - though i'd be surprised if the video chip in is is ok
otherwise, i'll try the x61 thinkpad for it >:}
SvenDowideit is very close to trying to build his own notebook computer
as widescreen pisses me off (due to lack of vertical px)
SvenDowideit really does go this time :)
[02:39]
dj_segfaulthttp://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=2686
This is the meeting I missed because I didn't get out of work until 6:15. Which sucks because I'm on the Board of the group http://www.blu.org/cgi-bin/calendar/2012-dec
I bought my current main server (mail/IMAP) for $40 US at a flea market. Fairly fast P4. Nobody wants them because they're single core but more than good enough for that.
[02:42]
.............................. (idle for 2h25mn)
SvenDowideitdj_segfault y - i have a really big stack of core2duos
but when you get down to it, they draw an awful lot more power than is reasonable
the p4's are (iirc) even worse
i have one i7 box, and when idling, it draws ~20W
er, ok, its an i5
[05:12]
dj_segfaultI'm currently using a i5 3.4GHz quad core box with 8GB RAM that I built last month as my main workstation. I haven't hooked it up to the Kill-A-Watt yet to measure its draw. I built it because (1) the laptop I was using as my main workstation blew its backlight and was 5 years old, and (2) a few months ago I started gaming with some guys at work.
Really? P4's are power-hungry? My P4 machine that's the mail server, etc draws about 135W. But I also kill X windows and some other services so it's "even more idle". That's the machine I bought for $40.
with memory and hard drive
Damn. You're right. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-cpu-power-consumption,1750-9.html
It looks like an Atom processor might be the way to go for a low-usage server http://superuser.com/questions/339721/power-consumption-of-pentium-4-laptop-vs-atom-nettop

BabarSvenDowideit: grabbing part of a repo was the all reason Micha was wondering how to split the git architecture for Foswiki: one repo for everything? one repo per web? one repo per topic (with attachements)? [07:59]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/ one [ WebHome ] [07:59]
MichaelDaumBabar, right. and what about locking in a multiuser setup.
repo ops might need to be atomic ... which would suck for a one-git-covers-all architecture
[08:01]
CDotAll I can say is KISS, please. Pretty please. /me does not want to have to reboot his brain every time he wants to do something in FW. [08:04]
MichaelDaumhail the reboot ... you know ... like windows. [08:06]
jastI still hold that precisely this issue makes it rather useless to use git as a wiki backend
you could put each topic in a separate branch, of course, but then you have tons of branches, and some of git's tools enumerate all branches depending on how you call them
[08:08]
MichaelDaumthe other end of the scale is one git per topic (incl attachments) [08:11]
jastand if you put each topic in a completely separate repo, you can't delta-compress between topics [08:11]
MichaelDaumor revert a rename across the site, undoing accidental fuckups [08:12]
jastwhat you really want is something like rcs but with a common git-like object store
i.e. per-file history but per-wiki common storage
[08:19]
CDotwhat's the fascination with using git? [08:28]
***ChanServ sets mode: +o MichaelDaum_ [08:29]
jastyeah, that's precisely my point :) [08:34]
is anyone actually using SafeWikiPlugin in production? [08:44]
MichaelDaumWikiGroups is broken [08:51]
MartinKaufmannHi! A few days ago we had a discussion regarding umlaut in topic names.
In the meantime I converted a test installation to utf-8 and installed TopicNameValidationPlugin.
That doesn't solve my problem as we create new topics only by entering WikiWords in an existing topic.
WikiWords with an umlaut in the first word are not converted into a link at all (safe but maybe confusing for the users).
[08:52]
jastthat plugin doesn't deal with turning things into links [08:55]
MartinKaufmannIf there is an umlaut in the second word, the system tries to generate a link up to the umlaut, e.g. WasserErwärmung -> WasserErw [08:55]
jastall it does is make sure that you can restrict what topic names can be used when editing/saving topics [08:55]
MartinKaufmannjast: Yes, that's what I found out as well. [08:55]
jastthere isn't currently any good way to support WikiWords with extended characters [08:56]
MichaelDaumMartinKaufmann, I told you already: there is currently no way to give your users WikiWords with umlauts. [08:56]
jastneither in the actual topic names nor in WikiWord links [08:56]
MartinKaufmannI don't want/need WikiWords with umlauts but I need a work-around for users who try to generate them. [08:56]
jastthere's a handler for generating links from WikiWords but I don't know enough about it to tell whether it could be done with that [08:57]
MichaelDaumthis handler wont ever see WasserErwärmung, only WasserErw [08:57]
jastright... [08:57]
MartinKaufmannAnd ErwärmungWasser is not translated into a link because it stops at Erw? [08:59]
CDotjast: SafeWikiPluginn is used on f.o [08:59]
MartinKaufmannSo how difficult would it be to translate WikiWords with umlauts internally in words without (e.g. WasserErwaermung)? [09:04]
jastMartinKaufmann: pretty difficult, because the wikiword detection happens in foswiki's core
CDot: I have security concerns
[09:11]
CDotjast: pm me if you want to discuss in private [09:23]
........................... (idle for 2h11mn)
SvenDowideitthe biggest problem with git for foswiki, is acl's
as git acl's are per repo
so y - you get to have one git repo per topic
which is pretty much what we have with rcs
whereas svn has an acl model that is pretty trivial to convert from foswiki
wrt the other good q: 'what's the fascination with using git?' y - its the hot hotness thing - but i can't see how it applies usefully to our situation
[11:34]
jastif it's pushes you're concerned about... you can do arbitrary access checks while receiving changes [11:35]
SvenDowideitbut i'm asking here in case my analysis is flawed
pulls too
y, i can write some hideous hooks to replicate svn acls on git
but whats the point?
SvenDowideit actually finds using git svn quite useful
as some of the svn repo's i use have acl's - and thus those issues are taken care of too
mostly whats nicer about git is being able to pull in arbitary repo stuff - ie using git to install someone's plugin

I modified line 83 of /etc/foswiki/LocalSite.cfg to "$Foswiki::cfg{Email}{ValidTLD} = qr(AERO|ARPA|ASIA|BIZ|CAT|COM|COOP|EDU|GOV|INFO|INT|JOBS|MIL|MOBI|MUSEUM|NAME|NET|ORG|PRO|TEL|TRAVEL|XXX)i;

........................ (idle for 1h56mn)
gac410SvenDowideit: You around? It turns out some really strange support issues are related to RPM installs of 1.1.6? Have you tested the packages?
Ex. Sandbox js topic validation eliminates the letter "s" from all topics. Module failure on CommengPlugin (yes, spelled with a G)
[20:29]
foswiki_irc9i got that to once
were you actually able to connec to the server?
i am getting 404 error
[20:32]
gac410Did you install using the rpm packages? [20:32]
foswiki_irc9i cant even get it to install [20:32]
gac410How...
rpm, debian, or tgz file
[20:32]
foswiki_irc9meaning how i cant install?
well i tried to install using rpm
i am installing on rhel6
and it gets 404
(from the instructions)
i had 1.1.5 but ran into some bugs
so i updated to 1.1.6...i saw ur comment plugin error
the one thats spelled with G
[20:33]
gac410I think something is wrong with the rpm packages. There are several reports of really strange behavior. I recommend sticking with our official distribution, which is the .tgz or .zip files. [20:33]
foswiki_irc9so i told yum to uninstall ... to reinstall gain..but now it wont reinstall
i just installed using .tgz
it works ...but ... everything is in text format
no graphics is showing up :(
[20:34]
gac410Okay. text format, that's usually configuraion for the pub url path.
Graphics are loaded directly from apache without foswiki being involved.
[20:34]
foswiki_irc9so my pub url is messed up? hmm [20:35]
gac410Or the apache server doesn't have permission to read the pub directory [20:35]
foswiki_irc9well its /var/www/foswiki/pub
and when i installed i did chown -R apache:apache foswiki
[20:36]
gac410URL??? That should just be pub or foswiki/pub definitely no /var/... in the URL [20:36]
foswiki_irc9err yes the PubUrlPath is /pub [20:37]
gac410Manually visit your site/pub/System/PatternSkin/print.css and see if that comes up or gives you a 404 or something [20:38]
foswiki_irc9404 :S [20:39]
gac410For ex: http://foswiki.org/pub/System/PatternSkin/print.css should work on your site as well
Okay. So something in the apache configuration.
[20:39]
foswiki_irc9damn :(
hmm
[20:39]
gac410Your apache error log should report either a not found or not authorized or something like that. [20:40]
foswiki_irc91 sec checkin that
its full of /var/www/pub does not exist
now i am just confused hehe
[20:40]
gac410You could look at Foswiki:Support/ApacheConfigGenerator that should generate a well validated apache configuration for foswiki [20:43]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support/ApacheConfigGenerator [ ApacheConfigGenerator ] [20:43]
foswiki_irc9hmm i did use that .... the path i used is /var/www/foswiki (where the installation is) and my url path is /sailwiki (i assume this is what i will call it ie URL_to_server/sailwiki?) [20:46]
gac410yes. So in your bin/configure, the puburl path should be /sailwiki/pub
and bin path should be /sailwiki/bin
(hm... not sure about the leading slash. )
yes. /sailwiki/pub and /sailwiki/bin and your test for the css page should be yoursite.com/sailwiki/pub/System/PatternSkin/print.css
[20:47]
foswiki_irc9a moment gonna just replace the entire foswiki.conf file again
still text hmm ... i just replaced the conf file with the one from generator hmm
[20:51]
gac410Check for 404's again. [20:55]
foswiki_irc9sweet ok the 404 is gone
could it be that some modules / packes or somethin is missing to process?
[20:58]
gac410hm... but still text. Do you mean that the page is rendered? or are you just getting perl code displayed.
Probably not, if you successfully instaled the RPM's then the dependencies should be all set.
[20:58]
foswiki_irc9well i didnt use rpm right... i downloaded the tar file
i couldnt get the rpm install to work :S
cuz
that returned a 404 error
[20:59]
gac410right, but previously you did run an rpm install. [20:59]
foswiki_irc9yes
that install worked hehe
graphics wise
[20:59]
gac410So that would have resolved dependencies. [21:00]
foswiki_irc9hmm [21:00]
gac410So, sailwiki/bin/configure works, and sailwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome gives you un-styled text. ie rendered but no "layout" or graphics? [21:01]
foswiki_irc9that is correct
hmm from what i remember from a previous install... wouldnt PatternSkin show up on teh extensions list?
[21:01]
gac410er... in configure, yes, but not in the System/InstalledPlugins.
if you go to sailwiki/System/InstalledPlugins, do you see any errors there?
[21:02]
foswiki_irc9wow... so
in extensions for example in /configure
patternskin is not showing up as installed
in installed plugins its also not there
its werid cuz.... when i click on the install / change whatever link in /extensions... it says patternskin is installed there
[21:04]
gac410Hm. it really ought to be there, as it's in the tar file. ... strange.
Skins don't show up in the list of plugins.
[21:04]
foswiki_irc9ah [21:05]
gac410Skins don't have anything to enable/disable [21:05]
foswiki_irc9well in plugin diagnostics ... patterskin is not there
is it suppose to show up?
[21:05]
gac410Right. It's not a plugin
:_
:)
[21:05]
foswiki_irc9sorry :P
myhead is gonna explode lol
so many thigns went wrong today and this
[21:05]
gac410So in your browser, display the " page source" You should see the paths that it is using for graphics.
For ex. On that InstalledPlugins page, You should see something like @import url('/foswiki/pub/System/PatternSkinTheme/layout.css');
Except in your case /sailwiki/pub/...
1) Does that "look right", and 2) Does it work if you paste that url into the browser address bar'
[21:06]
foswiki_irc9server/sailwiki/pub/System/PatternSkinTheme/layout.css does not return a 404 or msising hm [21:10]
gac410Doe it return anything at all? [21:10]
foswiki_irc9well html, body ... so on
its a long line
[21:10]
gac410html??? That's not right, It should be plain old css. [21:11]
foswiki_irc9i mean whats on screen lol... ya it is a css [21:11]
gac410It should look like http://foswiki.org/pub/System/PatternSkinTheme/layout.css [21:12]
foswiki_irc9ya it looks like that :D [21:12]
gac410Okay. So if that is working, try shift-reload (or whatever your browser uses) to reload the page System/InstalledPlugins
reloading anything cached.
If the server can "serve" the css, then the browser really ought to be using it :)
And images all come from the same url. So typically if it works for one file, they all should work.
[21:12]
foswiki_irc9nothing :(
still text
[21:15]
gac410Is your site public? or is it behind a firewall? [21:15]

foswiki_irc9hence why i have had a headache for the longest time haha
could something in my httpd.conf file be messing with this somehow?
[21:19]
gac410Strange. Each request is sent to .../sailwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome/sailwiki/pub/...
like it's appending the pub path onto the page path.
Okay.... your LocalSite.cfg You are missing a leading slash on the PubUrlPath.
you need it to be /sailwiki/pub/... not sailwiki/pub
Without the leading slash, the browser just appends it to the page url
[21:23]

ohhhh sick :D
that fixed it
reload
[21:25]
gac410Great [21:28]
foswiki_irc9thanks so much'! :D [21:28]
gac410Are you seeing the other strangeness? CommengPlugin, or Sandbox javascript removing the letter "s" [21:29]
foswiki_irc9sandbox is not removing s now
(well this is a brannd new install) let me see the commeng thing
[21:29]
gac410Okay. The RPM packages must be badly broken. I'll remove them from the download page. [21:29]
foswiki_irc9i dont see anything in /working/logs ... ie there are is not error file [21:30]

gac410Excellent [21:38]
foswiki_irc9Thanks! Now I jsut ave to get the other extensions going :) [21:40]
gac410Hopefully things go more smoothly now [21:40]
foswiki_irc9i think it should... using the rpm install for example.. the comments never worked :S.... (i am not sure if i was only one with this issue) [21:41]
gac410I'm guessing the build server had an issue. SvenDowideit runs the builds, but is in Australia, so maybe sleeping now [21:42]
foswiki_irc9one last thing if you are still there. in /configure... the test /pub directory gives 404 error... and currently its set to /sailwiki/pub/ [21:48]

gac410Foswiki:Support/Question1219 [22:25]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support/Question1219 [ Comment plugin any default type not working. ] [22:25]
SvenDowideitso 3 reports? [22:25]
foswiki_irc9gogo eat [22:26]
SvenDowideitmmm, the 'rpm server' is pretty much never down - thats handled by dreamhost
the builder box does go down, but i'll resolve that next week
[22:27]
foswiki_irc9ill leave the quesiton... its about httpsredirectplugin. I wasnt the one who installed this in my previous instllation...but waht it did was when i visited the site it would bring up the apache login page asking for your credentials...now it doesnt seem to do that [22:28]
SvenDowideitfricken pre-xmas crud
i can't see the CommengPlugin problem
so i'm not sure thats on my end - but i'll poke it more some time
i _hope_ the pub dir append due to leading slash missing is user foobar - as i don't change our checkers
which leaves that bizzare regex
which i've hit with the tgz too
[22:28]
gac410the missing slash was encountered with the tgz, and is a config error I think.
SvenDowideit: Also Foswiki:Support/Question1224
[22:30]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support/Question1224 [ Bug after upgrading to 1.1.6 from 1.1.5 ] [22:31]
gac410Foswiki:Support/Item1204 also some strangeness [22:32]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item1204 [ Item1204: ImageGalleryPlugin doesn't show images with an additional dot in filname ] http://foswiki.org/Support/ [ WebHome ] [22:32]
SvenDowideity, as i say, i can't see anything to do with CommengPlugin in the source for the rpms
and so i'm suspicious that its not the rpms
it sounds more like that entire install was foobared
[22:32]
foswiki_irc9i actually posted that question sven [22:33]
SvenDowideit[02:13:34] I modified line 83 of /etc/foswiki/LocalSite.cfg to "$Foswiki::cfg{Email}{ValidTLD} = qr(AERO|ARPA|ASIA|BIZ|CAT|COM|COOP|EDU|GOV|INFO|INT|JOBS|MIL|MOBI|MUSEUM|NAME|NET|ORG|PRO|TEL|TRAVEL|XXX)i [22:33]
foswiki_irc9i initially isntalled 1.1.5
then the package updated that day when i did a yum updated
[22:33]
SvenDowideitthat regex is a problem [22:34]
foswiki_irc9err yum update [22:34]
gac410er. Foswiki:Support/Question1204 [22:34]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support/Question1204 [ Foswiki acts different on Linux vs Windows browsers ] [22:34]
SvenDowideiti've hit on upgrading a tgz install too
so there's something we should play with in core
foswiki_irc9 y - and given the sailfin/bin/.....pub thing
i presume that the 1.1.5 didn't work, and 1.1.6 made things worse
[22:34]
foswiki_irc9ya :S [22:35]
SvenDowideitbut very good to know that was what you did - means i have a path to try to reproduce
um
so http://foswiki.org/Support/Question1204
means you may have a very broken rpm install
as you are __not__ supposed to use the configure extensions installer
if you install via rpm, you should .... install using rpms
[22:35]
foswiki_irc9interesting .. i didnt know that
nothing in the docs says us hould... is there? :S
[22:38]
SvenDowideitmeans that my patch that puts the message next to that button isn't there?
http://foswiki.org/Support/Question1222 should be solved now, as i see foswiki-patchfoswikicontrib in my repo
http://foswiki.org/Support/Question1224 - I'll need time to test
sadly, thats not now :/
so gac410 does that mean there have been 2 people reporting issues with the 1.1.6 rpm?
and one was the email regex?
SvenDowideit clearly has no idea whats been happening in the last months :(
[22:38]
gac410SvenDowideit: not sure. ... I've been pretty distracted. oops gotta run [22:40]
SvenDowideitgac410 :) laters
SvenDowideit has to go too - back anon, kids and shopping
