foswiki_irc1good evening. i would like to ask if it is possible to use the new DBCache engine (caching with mysql, etc) from 1.2 in 1.1.8 (maybe it is as simple as installing the contrib+plugin?
or are there deeper changes and it is not recommended?
[12:06]
CDotfoswiki_irc1: did you mean the DBIStoreContrib? Or DBCachePlugin (et al?)
if the former, then the checked-in code won't work with 1.1.x (it was broken by some checkins a while ago) but I am working on a new version that should be released within the next week or so.
[12:07]
foswiki_irc1probably i mean both. Installing the whole cache engine in 1.1.x [12:08]
does the 1.2 page cache need DBIStore or it can work with current store? please see here: http://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item11549 [12:16]
MichaelDaumfoswiki_irc1, if you are referring to the PageCache then you will have to wait for 1.2.0 as it has been rewritten completely ... over a year ago.
DBIStore has got nothing to do with it.
[12:16]
foswiki_irc1ok, and there is no chance to replace 1.1.x cache with the one from trunk? [12:18]
MichaelDaumthe 1.2.x PageCache is a different subsystem of Foswiki, separate to the Store.
gawd in Feb 2014 this work is almost 2 years old then :(
foswiki_irc1, it would be better to help getting foswiki-1.2.0 released instead of picking things here and there and frankenstein them into 1.1.x.
[12:19]
foswiki_irc1correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1.2 caches everything in, e.g. MySQL, which is then queried/updated by every fcgi process
making everything faster :)
MichaelDaum, thanks for the reply. so you say it is not possible (or not reliable) to take the 1.2 page cache into 1.1.8/9
[12:23]
MichaelDaumthe meta data for the cache housekeeping goes into the db. not the html blob itself. this is living on the filesystem in <foswiki>/working/cache/<md5>
foswiki_irc1, correct
there are many other performance improvements in the Store that aren't portable either, and make a big difference.

gac410MichaelDaum: It's a bit counter intuitive, but nfreeze generates a slightly smaller results, and is a bit faster: Item12697 [16:40]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item12697 [ Item12697: DirectedGraphPlugin use of Storable is platform dependent. ] [16:40]
gac410Hm... I'll add in a thaw to see if there is any difference on the decoding side.
I'm assuming that similar results would be had for store vs. nstore but didn't want to deal with the file i/o
yup, same results, for a combined freeze / thaw, nfreeze is around 3% faster for an approx. 15k hash
[16:41]
MichaelDaumwell the hashes I am dealing with are more in the \d\d MB area [16:46]
gac410With a small hash, the difference was negligible, I had to bump the hash to 15k to get non-zero % difference. It would be interesting to see the results for a megabit size hash. [16:48]
MichaelDaumyes your results are indeed counterintuitive
I wonder why there is any native store format at all if there were only disadvantages
[16:48]
***ColasHome has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) [16:50]
gac410I pasted my benchmark code to Item12697, It wouldn't take much to make the %hash bigger. I just didn't have any good source material, so it's a bunch of garbage lines, all containing ascii.
In any event, for DirectedGraphPlugin, the cost of generating the cached image is much much larger than storing the hash of file properties. I came across a post somewhere with comments that the graph generation took over an hour. Loosing that hash would be costly indeed.
I wonder if converting to "network byte order" is more costly on other platforms

LynnwoodGreetings all - i've discovered the morning that ExcelImportExportPlugin is basically completely broken. This leaves us with no options for importing data or bulk-creation of topics. :-(
As anyone come up with any options in this regards?
btw, i already looked through the discussions and tasks related to the plugin and tried what i found to no avail.
[17:12]
biffheroIs the debian packager here? I am getting "Depends: foswiki but it is not going to be installed" errors when trying to "apt-get install foswiki-famfamfamcontrib" (I am installing that because the natskin says I need it.) (using the fosiki.com repo) [17:21]
gac410biffhero: Debian packager is in Australia, so it's middle of the night for Sven [17:32]

When I go to the /bin/configure app and disable the metacommentplugin, the comments still show up on the page. I'm trying to completely remove one comment, but getting an error. So, I thought, disable the plugin. Not working. [19:20]
