gregg4567Question: How does foswiki's system differ from a webapp framework? Or can foswiki be the basis for a webapp framework?
alternative question -- can someone just add modules to foswiki to provide document management, CMS, etc?
todo lists, project mgmt etc?

GuilainCgregg4567: first of all, by standard mechanism inside of foswiki, provide by default, functionality of a document management system, and a CMS
but what foswiki is more, is for me the ability to have/make easily webapp without lot of knowledge, by everyone (not only "one" developper, versus "several" user), the user could be involve in the webapp, and be an actor of change
with foswiki, your framework is two things : a development framework, and a "use" framework"
everything in foswiki is under versionning

GuilainCat least, the main main concept in wiki (foswiki, and other) is the ability to interconnect (by WikiWord mechanism) concept, and make representation of knowledge. [07:24]
gregg4567GuilainC: Thanks. I haven't looked at the internals. Is foswiki adaptable to a database? I know it is essentially text file based. Which is why I liked it, but there are some applications that require database functions. [07:24]
GuilainCgregg4567: i use foswiki from 4 years, i'm project(s) manager and work in the automotive sector (Research & innovation), and i use it for : [07:25]
gregg4567Or should I say are better implemented with databases. [07:25]
GuilainCmanaging my resources, managing task, delay & planning, managing the design information (as kind of PLM), requirement management.
i use only file storage, should be, search inside module,
what i'm sure, is foswiki can use to query SQL database & co, i need it for interconnecting with my accounting service
what are your application taht require database functions (if you have example)
is it for integration with ?
[07:26]
gregg4567GuilainC: So do you write your own stuff or are you using mostly modules written by others? [07:29]
***ChanServ sets mode: +o pharvey [07:29]
gregg4567GuilainC: I have multiple projects that have multiple tasks. Right now I have a webapp framework that seems to be receding with respect to irc and forum and development.
I have a separate wiki for knowledge mgmt.
No document mgmt that is integrated with my current system, though I built a good one with filemaker, but have not converted to a real RDMS.
I would like to consolidate everything and get a flexible sytem. Foswiki's perl base attracted me because I know a little perl and perl has persistence.
I have currently been looking at catalyst and need to learn it in between soccer practices, kids homework, and my day job.
btw -- that is perl catalyst webapp framework. Catalyst seems to be a popular computer software title.
[07:30]
GuilainCi use plugin, which provide function, and after you use it for presenting, as you like. You can compare this with a kind of excel macro, you have excel, with lot of fonction, but you can developpe your own treatement, own powerfull table. The comparison stop here, it's just for illustrating.
foswiki seems to adapted for what you want to do, i don't know, catalyst, sorry.
[07:38]
gregg4567GuilainC: Since foswiki is flat file and text based, are the plug ins main doing regular expressions and then presenting with perl?
Catalyst tutorial and intro http://search.cpan.org/~ether/Catalyst-Manual-5.9007/lib/Catalyst/Manual/Tutorial.pod
[07:41]
GuilainCyou are outside my competencies ;) basicly, what i know, is foswiki parse "topic" and render web [07:44]
gregg4567Catalyst is essentially an object-oriented database webapp framework. [07:44]
GuilainCplugin do more that simple regular expressions
GuilainC take a look of catalys
[07:44]
gregg4567GuilainC: I have not gone through the tutorial yet either. Would love for foswiki to make it unnecessary for me to learn it.
GuilainC: I will look at the plugins and see if I can make it work for me. Thanks for the clues.
[07:45]
GuilainCcatalyst seem to be more low level
foswiki can be use as it ! is already ready after install
take look of : http://foswiki.org/Extensions/WebHome
for plugin
(i've to go, back in one hour)
[07:47]
gregg4567GuilainC: Thanks. [07:51]

z4khello. I can't seem to find documentation on how to remove a plugin from foswiki. Just for installing, configuring and disabling stuff... [10:39]

jastz4k: in /bin/configure there's a button for installing/updating/removing extensions [12:15]
CDotgregg4567: "Is foswiki adaptable to a database?" - it is now, using the DBIStoreContrib. [12:20]
z4kjast: yes! scrolled past that one a few times I think. thanks [12:29]

JennyKollaHello. Now I set the {Sessions}{ExpireAfter} = 300 at configuration->Security and Authentification->Sessions. I think if somebody don't do something 5 minutes long than foswiki will logout them. Why don't work this? [14:02]
