WhoWhatWhen
orevgac410: thanks, I see it. I never use that account, just have to reset all passwords. Is the Password field the one that this would be associtated with? and can I assume it's the same encryption as in htpasswd? [00:01]
gac410No. You need to login with bin/configure and change it from there.
Encoding of that password has changed depending upon the release of foswiki, so best to let configure change it.
What release are you running?
[00:01]
orevwhere is it in configure? I looked through and didn't see it
1.1.3 I think
[00:02]
gac410Hm... hang on and I'll look at 1.1.3 configure. and the password encoding.
1.1.3 uses an old style "crypt" encoded password - with 2 characters of salt ... if I'm reading Foswiki::Configure::UI::_encode() correctly
[00:03]
FoswikiBothttp://trunk.foswiki.org/System/PerlDoc?module=Foswiki::Configure::UI [00:06]
orevyeah, just noticed that I could have changed to md5 or sha -- wish I had seen that before I got users on there [00:12]
gac410er... only if you upgrade past 1.1.3 [00:12]
orevI have a few options in the list for {Htpasswd}{Encoding} [00:13]
gac410That's not configure!
1.1.3, configure uses crypt. hardcoded.
[00:13]
orevfoswiki/bin/configure
under Security and Authentication / Passwords
[00:13]
gac410{Htpasswd}{Encoding} is used for passwords set in the Foswiki itself (Template Authentication) [00:14]
orevoh, ok [00:14]
gac410/bin/configure in 1.1.3 is hardcoded to use crypt for the admin super-user [00:14]
orevthen a regular htpasswd command should give me a compatible password [00:15]
gac410Current configure uses er... SHA1, and will recognize older encodings. And current Foswiki can auto-detect the .htpasswd encoding.
orev, Yes it *should*... I was trying to test it for you. But my 1.1.3 system is toast. I upgraded perl, so deprecated qw() and upgraded RCS, So the checks for RCS version fail too.
[00:15]
orevtested and it worked [00:16]
gac410Ah... good to know. [00:16]
orevthanks for the help. always helpfule as usual [00:17]
gac410Need to be cautious upgrading the system btw. Old foswiki has all sorts of issues on new RCS and new latest perl.
sure, you're welcome.
[00:17]
orevI'm on centos 5, so no hope of that getting a newer perl any time soon :) [00:17]
gac410:) [00:17]

gac410rcs changed from a 2 digit version 1.2, to a 3-digit character 1.2.3 and we do a numeric compare in older foswiki. :P [00:18]
orevI recently played around with perlbrew, so will probably use that for significant perl sutff going forward [00:18]
gac410Yes indeed. perlbrew + cpanm is excellent. I've got 9 different perl versions here to verify various levels.
And yet distros ship "modified" perls. So perl 5.10.1 from distro A is not the same as 5.10.1 from distro B, or the perlbrew version. It's really maddening.
[00:19]
orevhaven't tried cpanm yet. I was trying to get DBI working with oracle. would have been nicer to hit myself in the head with a brick
luckily I don't use any of the fancy new features, so differences to me are mainly modules
[00:20]
gac410:) Well with perlbrew, cpanm is the way to go. http://blog.fox.geek.nz/2010/09/installing-multiple-perls-with.html [00:21]
orevnice writeup [00:23]
gac410I've pretty much used that page as a formula for setting up my test perls. One downside, it always ends up with latest cpan. Sometimes I want an old perl with the then-current cpan packages. I don't know how to do that yet. [00:24]
