jastyay [14:32]
gac410jast, are you the cheering section? [14:34]
jastgac410: unfortunately your new source strings spell "botton" :} [14:34]
gac410oh crap. /me can't type. [14:35]
jastonly one of them, actually, the other is fine [14:35]
gac410I'll fix it ... unless you want to. [14:35]
jastI'll spend the time translating other new strings [14:36]
gac410okay. all done here. But I'll wait until you finish, ... so you can find more of my typo's :) [14:38]
jastI've looked through all new strings and didn't notice anything [14:41]
gac410okay. I'll wait to commit until the repo is stable. [14:41]
.......... (idle for 48mn)
MichaelDaumMichaelDaum just received the new gitignore ... basically the old ones have all been removed
so I am blind now due to all the untracked files showing up now
wtf
[15:29]
gac410Did you run the tools/git_excludes to populate the .git/info/excludes file? [15:31]
MichaelDaumhow do I do that per extension , e.g. only for JQueryPlugin? [15:32]
gac410I didn't think you had to. Each extension should have a static .gitignore that's checked in. [15:33]
MichaelDaumthis one now has got 147 untracked files
gac410, right, and Julian just removed them
or better he cleaned them up
[15:33]
gac410My git status is completely clean. The new gitigore doesn't miss anything.
What did he miss?
[15:34]
MichaelDaumdo you want me to paste in 147 lines of untracked files being reported in JQueryPlugin ? [15:36]
gac410No. I'm trying to understand why you have so many untracked that I don't Please don't paste in 147 lines [15:36]
MichaelDaumhere is the bottom one: pub/System/JQueryPlugin/ui/jquery.ui.tooltip.init.js
from cd foswiki/core/JQueryPlugin; git status .
I called pseudo-install again for it
as well as git_excludes.pl
[15:37]
gac410strange. That file is ignored for me. [15:38]
MichaelDaumit does process _all_ of my repos ... which is pretty frightening btw ... yet still it doesnt seem to have changed anything.
where does it write its aut-generated ignores to, did you say?
[15:38]
gac410it should have generated them in distro/.git/info/excludes
Maybe you missed it, but Julian did create the Item branch and asked people to test. It worked fine for me.
[15:39]
MichaelDaumdoes your .git/info/excludes list pub/System/JQueryPlugin/ui/jquery.ui.tooltip.init.js
gac410, it is just now that I have time to test it ... or no I don't have time for it
[15:40]
gac410Yes. it lists /JQueryPlugin/pub/System/JQueryPlugin/ui/jquery.ui.tooltip.init.js [15:41]
MichaelDaumwhy doesn't it list in mine [15:41]
gac410no idea. my info/exclude is 943 lines. 1 for each non-default repo, plus one for each symlink found [15:42]
MichaelDaumgrep '^/JQueryPlugin' .git/info/exclude ... is empty for me [15:43]
gac410It also has an igore for /core/pub/System/JQueryPlugin
[15:43]
MichaelDaumthe /core ignores seem to be fine
not so the /JQueryPlugin
[15:44]
gac410Hm I really have no idea. [15:44]
MichaelDaumalright. will have to ask Julian [15:44]
gac410Must be something a bit different with your repo organization.
After I converted to his setup, my git status was cleaner than it's ever been.
[15:45]
GuilainCbe careful, IMHO, git doesn't share {at all, well} between repo .git/info/excludes. For sharing gitignore between repo the best solution i've found is sharing .gitignore at the root of the repo and add it to into the git repo [15:46]
gac410The .git/info/excludes is generated by pseudo_install for the files and symlinks that pseudo-install generates.
The .gitignore files at levels below the root level (ie. in core, and each extension) are intended to be checked into the repo per Julian's changes.
Since everyone pseudo-installs a different set of extensions, no need to share. That's why Julian sticks it in .git/info/excludes.

[15:51]

MichaelDaumfor me the situation is worse [15:53]
gac410MichaelDaum: on your system is core/pub/System/JQueryPlugin/ui/jquery.ui.tooltip.init.js a symlink? [15:55]
MichaelDaumno it is compressed js [15:56]
gac410Really ??? how does that happen. That's the issue. On my system, pseudo-install creates a symlink.
On my system it's a symlink to absolute/path/to/JQueryPlugin/pub/System/JQueryPlugin/ui/jquery.ui.tooltip.init.uncompressed.js
[15:56]
MichaelDaumthis is not an issue [15:59]
gac410I think that Julians code finds the generated symlinks. [15:59]
MichaelDaumI don't like those symlinks as I compile the css and js instead of symlinking them
uglifyjs is the first unit test to pass
[15:59]
gac410right, so he needs to detect compiled/compressed rather than just the symlinked [16:00]
MichaelDaumy [16:00]
gac410In meantime, stackoverflow has a comment on how to add current untraced files to .gitignore. git status --porcelain | grep '^??' | cut -c4- >>.gitignore
That could populate your distro/.gitigore
[16:03]
GithubBot[distro] MichaelDaum pushed 1 new commit to master: http://git.io/pRKu

[16:05]
***GithubBot has left [16:05]
MichaelDaumthat's what I do constantly on new plugins ... and did so for JQueryPlugin
but added them locally to the plugins ... not globally
[16:06]
gac410I bet that you're the only dev who works with minified/compressed files. [16:06]
MichaelDaumI am the only one that does js on foswiki at all [16:07]
JulianLevenswell I don't do js yet [16:07]
gac410Were your ears burning? [16:08]
JulianLevensNo my sixth irc sense
The script is currently very clean with clear responsibilities
I need to understand Michael's needs I wonder that is a case for managing in your local .gitignore
Alas, I have to go I have appointments to get to, please add your issues to Item13135
[16:08]
gac410I suppose it could impact anyone who choses to compile the js/css instead of symlink ... I'd probably only run into it after running a build for the release, which does compile everything [16:11]
MichaelDaumJulianLevens, I constantly added generated files to the plugin's own .gitignore ... and checked that in. you removed some of these.
I am not sure why you did that
instead of guessing using git_exclude.pl these were accuratly maintained
[16:11]
JulianLevensAren't they usually symlinks? [16:12]
MichaelDaumcompiled css and js aren't
I don't like those symlinks; part of javascripting is to unit test your code using uglifyjs
plus I even want the dev env to run under the same circumstances a prod env would do
[16:12]
gac410JulianLevens: If you run a true extension build ( perl build.pl release ) you get compiled ( minified, compressed) code [16:14]
JulianLevensHmm, ok, I'll need to think about all of this, but I really need to dash I'm probably late already. I'll pick up on this tomorrow [16:14]
gac410MichaelDaum: It sounds like if you just revert the specific changes to your tuned extension .gitignore files, all would be fine. And should not hurt what Julian is doing. [16:14]
***JulianLevens has left [16:15]
MichaelDaumgac410, I added those plugin specifc .gitignore entries to the distro one now [16:15]
gac410Dont' check that one in. I think the best bet will be to revert Julian's changes for the Extension/.gitignore files. They are intended to be tuned, he just reverted your tuning. [16:16]
MichaelDaumI am not sure anybody checking out some plugin would want to do that [16:16]
gac410That way anyone who runs extension/build.pl release has an acceptable .gitignore. [16:16]
MichaelDauminstead of everybody having to maintain their local distro/.gitignore each repo should take care of its local git ignore needs ... and these are checked out along with the rest of the code [16:17]
gac410regardless, we would never want to check in the compiled code of an extension so adding to .gitignore is correct,. [16:17]
MichaelDaum/core/ ignores are fine as part of pseudo installing stuff
thats a big improvement now
[16:17]
gac410Right. What you did with JQueryPlugin/.gitignore was correct too.,
Nothing wrong with reverting the .gitignore in JQueryPlugin.
I don't think julian needs to change anything either.
[16:18]
MichaelDaumany js code you check out from github - foswiki unrelated ones - comes with currated .gitignore that covers things not to be checked in such as pieces generated by the build process [16:19]
gac410yup. You are right on the mark with your tuned .gitignore in JQueryPlugin et. al.
All right, now I'm confused. I just ran a JQuery build. It generated all the compressed / zipped files. And yet they are all ignored just fine. wtf???
Ah. okay got it. I did .pseudo-install -u and then re-pseudo-installed. Now I'm broken.
And for jollies. ran perl build.pl gitignore >> ../../../../.gitignore and it is clean again.
