TwikiNoobhi all [14:34]
gac410hello [14:35]
TwikiNoobI just setup twiki and joined their IRC room to seek advice and saw one person... Thought id drop by to see what the community is like here
thinking about switching already ... lol
[14:35]
gac410we are generally pretty active ... though sometimes it takes a while to get a response. [14:37]
jastwe're not _that_ many, so there can be some gaps without activity... just so you know :) [14:39]
NewWikiMakerI've read good things about both products and have a moderate dev background but getting started seems more of a pain then it should be [14:39]
jastsome of the channels I'm in have several hundred users [14:39]
NewWikiMakerI see you have bots at least so someone is watching :-) [14:39]
jastit's true that TWiki and Foswiki are a bit more complex than a bunch of other popular wikis, but I guess that's because the use case differs a bit [14:40]
gac410a "structured wiki" is really very powerful, but with that comes complexity. The bot's don't do much. Mainly expand some strings. [14:40]
jastwe put a lot of emphasis on doing rather fancier things within the wiki, without having to resort to outright programming [14:40]
NewWikiMakerDoes fos use webspaces like twiki? [14:41]
jastyou can do a lot of data wrangling right in the wiki. for instance at our company we track meeting minutes for recurring meetings in the wiki, and display open tasks on everyone's personal page [14:41]
gac410you can certainly use foswiki as a simple shared text editor, but much power comes from data forms and macros [14:41]
jastFoswiki is a fork of TWiki, made several years ago, so the basic structure is the same [14:42]
NewWikiMakerright I read up on the split [14:42]
jastwebs are something they have in common... so are data forms, templates and such [14:42]
gac410yeah we are still fairly compatible. Projects have diverged some though. Foswiki core development has been extremely active. [14:43]
NewWikiMakerI'm basically looking to do a structured wiki. Have a few seperate KB's one for proceesses one for client documentation and if we could do meeting minutes that would be great [14:43]
jastalmost purely objectively speaking, the main advantage of Foswiki is that there seems to be more development in the core modules, trying to make more things possible at a fundamental level, and probably more activity on IRC ;) [14:43]
NewWikiMakerhey im willing to go where the friendly helpful community is
even though i spent a good amount of time with the twiki setup bc its on a plesk server we have for our clients
[14:44]
gac410depending on your native language, foswiki 2.0 made a huge change - switched to utf-8 and unicode internally, so much more friendly to the non-ascii user. [14:45]
NewWikiMakerwe are a IT managed service provider. We have about 150 clients and have been using onenote for documentation. When i started about died
so this was my solution
are there any specific channels for new user setup help?
[14:46]
jasthere is fine [14:47]
NewWikiMakerso based on my description of what I'm looking to do that it should be easy to setup? [14:49]
jastwell, my experience says there are always requirements that aren't entirely straightforward ;) but in principle, sure [14:49]
NewWikiMakerlol I assure you anything is better than one note [14:50]
jastI work for a company that does consulting (mainly QM/processes) in tandem with setting up a wiki based on Foswiki, so this is stuff we do all the time. it's certainly possible. :) [14:50]
NewWikiMaker$$$$$$$$$$$$ ... hehe [14:51]
jastbut there are a few things it helps to be aware of... one particularly important one is search. foswiki has a built-in fulltext and structured search system, but with the standard storage mechanism it doesn't scale extremely well for huge amounts of content
there are several ways to deal with that... the one we've chosen at our company is to use SolrPlugin, an extension that indexes wiki content in Apache Solr and provides a query interface to it.
[14:52]
GithubBot[distro] MichaelDaum pushed 1 new commit to master: http://git.io/vngis

NewWikiMakerHow long should a setup take?
if i already have all the settings/requirements on the server for twiki
any drastic changes aside from PTR records
[14:53]
jastTWiki and Foswiki aren't exactly compatible anymore, so just extracting fw on top of tw isn't going to work [14:55]
NewWikiMaker*wishful thinking [14:56]
jastbut the install procedure is _fairly_ straightforward. we have a tool for generating the Apache config, which is about the hardest bit
http://foswiki.org/Support/ApacheConfigGenerator
[14:57]
gac410Foswiki 2.0 install is **Very** different from any previous version of foswiki or twiki [14:57]
jastquite a bit easier, though [14:57]
gac410It "bootstraps" itself. So extract, then visit your landing page. Main/WebHome generally. And follow the link to configure. [14:58]
NewWikiMakerthat is nice... the server side stuff doesnt bother me as much as the software useage setup (long time IT admin) [14:58]
gac410It mostly runs even without an configuration, though you really need to save the config ;) [14:58]
NewWikiMakercant imagine why that would be important! lol [14:59]
jastit will work without saving but then it has to keep guessing the values, which of course takes time [15:00]
gac410on older versions of foswik, and twiki as well, your first page is bin/configure. If you do that, we'll guess the wrong default URL. You really have to start with the expected default url. [15:00]
NewWikiMakerso once this is done is anyone here willing to give a little direction?
yeah i did a meta data redirect in twiki
[15:00]
gac410Most foswiki sites use what we call "short URls" Unless T* has caught up, it's more difficult to configure there.
So a normal foswiki view URL is http://somesite.com/Main/WebHome for ex. No "bin/view" script location.
By landing there first, the bootstrap guesses that you are using "short urls" and figures out the correct url prefixes, etc.
[15:02]
NewWikiMakeri follow you... I was at http://site/bin/view to correct it i renamed the old index.html and created a new one with a meta data redirect with time=0 to forward to the /bin/view directory
there is no clear documentation on how to prevent the configure page from coming up. I had assume dit would have been in .htaccess
[15:04]
gac410If you use Foswiki:Support.ApacheConfigGenerator it sets it all up. [15:06]
FoswikiBothttp://foswiki.org/Support.ApacheConfigGenerator [ ApacheConfigGenerator ] [15:06]
jastin Foswiki 2.0 access to configure is restricted
by the engine itself, that is
[15:06]
gac410Foswiki 2.0 completely changed how configure is protected. By default, it is restricted to the AdminGroup users. But you can configure a list of authorized config users in the config interface.
We don't depend upon web server protection at all.
[15:06]
NewWikiMakerOk, well it's been nice chatting. I have to give Twiki some attention or my boss will shit when I say I want to scrap it after less than 24 hrs of testing [15:07]
gac410Also Foswiki 2.0 makes the concept of the superuser "admin" and a shared password optional. No more saving a "backdoor" user/pass when you save the configuratino. [15:07]
jastgood luck [15:08]
NewWikiMakerthank you! may i idle here? [15:08]
jastsure
we all do ;)
[15:08]
gac410shared passwords also get lots of evil eyes from auditors. But y, good luck. You are certainly welcome anytimte [15:08]
