WhoWhatWhen
foswiki_irc2Hello [01:00]
gac410hello foswiki_irc2 [01:01]
foswiki_irc2I get the following error when I run bulk_copy.pl
ERROR: Could not open logfile NOT SET/logs/error.log for write.
Your admin should 'configure' now and fix the errors
[01:01]
gac410Has your new installation been configured? The NOT SET indicates that configuration is incomplete. [01:01]
foswiki_irc2Hi gac410, I am actually bhargavasana, I joined this without logging in
Hmm..I believe I have configured
I was also finally able to setup LDAP authentication
[01:02]
gac410tbh I'd recommend CharsetConverterContrib instead of bulk_copy. Bulk copy can be tricky and digs deeply into the RCS history of each topic... it can be very slow. [01:03]
foswiki_irc2At this point I want to try and move data from old setup
Sure, I did not want to convert data in place in the old wiki
I have a backup of the old wiki
could I try and run CharsetConverterContrib on that backup folder for old wiki to see what happens?
[01:03]
gac410Sure. As long as it's a backup that you can restore ;) [01:04]
foswiki_irc2Should I set the store to RCS on my new foswiki 2.1.2? [01:04]
gac410That's what I'd recommend. Though if you've started registering users, you have begun to create PlainFileStore type history.
bulk_copy for every topic has to read every revision individually, and convert each revision. And it can convert from RCS to PlainFile. CharsetConverter converts the files themselves (.txt and .txt,v) and does not process every revision.
[01:05]
foswiki_irc2Understood
I haven't started registering users, I just setup ldap authentication
but I tried logging in to check ldap
does that also count as creating history?
[01:06]
gac410no. You have to edit a topic to create history, be it AdminGroup, or user registraiton, or clicking edit & save. [01:07]
foswiki_irc2Alright I haven't done that yet
sorry, I need to get back to my previous questions
[01:08]
gac410bin/configure does a search for conflicting history types and will warn if you configure RcsStore and it detects plainfile type history [01:08]
foswiki_irc2I have installed convertcharset in my new foswiki 2.1.2 [01:08]
gac410Okay. So if you change to PlainFile, then you MUST use bulk_copy from the old RCS system. If you stick with RCS, you can use charset converter in-place. [01:09]
foswiki_irc2i want to use that to run conversion on a backup folder of current/old foswiki 1.1.5
is that even possible?
[01:09]
gac410So pick a small web. and copy the data/<webname> and pub/<webname> directories onto the 2.1.2 system. That will install the webs, but with possibly bad characterset.
Then you should be able to run CharsetConverter on that web. But there are some settings needed. hang on I have to look.
[01:10]
foswiki_irc2And run then try running on it, Understood!
Sure, let me know
[01:10]
gac410okay, so *by default* it assumes an older 1.1 system that is still configured for iso-8859-1 You do NOT have that configuration on 2.1.2. So...
You run the tool using -webname=<the web you copied> and -charset=<the old original character set>
[01:11]
foswiki_irc2I see..even if my old wiki has iso-8859-1? [01:12]
gac410you can also use the "-i" option to "inspect" or provide information on what would be converted.
Generally sites have had good luck using cp1252 ... because that's what users cut/paste in from windows applications. smart quotes, windows bullets, etc.
If you don't have windows users, then the iso-8859-1 is probably the right setting. But who doesn't have windows users :D
[01:13]
foswiki_irc2yes, pretty much all our users are windows users :D
cd ..
[01:14]
gac410You must be careful to not run the conversion twice on the same web. That will corrupt the files. So have a backup, have a backup have a backup :) [01:14]
foswiki_irc2ok, I will make sure I will run it only once [01:15]
gac410If you are really unlucky and have users in many countries who may have pasted in their own native charsets, then things get more difficult [01:16]
foswiki_irc2Do you recommend plainfile vs rcs?
my old system is using $Foswiki::cfg{Store}{Implementation} = 'Foswiki::Store::RcsWrap';
[01:16]
FoswikiBothttps://trunk.foswiki.org/System/PerlDoc?module=Foswiki::Store::RcsWrap [01:16]
gac410For a site using RCS I recommend sticking with it. So you don't have as complex a conversion. [01:16]
foswiki_irc2Got it, so at this point, I need to go into configure of my 2.1.2 and make is also rcswrap? [01:17]
gac410RcsWrap and RcsLite are fully compatible. PlainFile is new, and very different. Faster, but it is also an "all or nothing conversion" You can't do a web at a time, test, etc.
That would be my recommendation.

gac410Rcs is very well tested, and has been around for forever. Once you have a nice stable 2.1.2 with RCS, you could always consider a plainfile conversion in the future. [01:18]
foswiki_irc2Souds good, how is that conversion done? just curious [01:19]
gac410Same way as you would do for 1.1.x -> 2.1.2. have two fully configured foswiki systems and run the bulk_copy to migrate all the data from one to the other. [01:19]
foswiki_irc2cool
finally any idea, why i am getting the NOT SET error using bulk_copy?
it appears like I have configured
I just set store to rcswrap
thought its giving me a warning
Possible loss of history if this setting is saved!
[01:20]
gac410So back to the NOT SET error. The other possibility is that you are somehow pointing to the wrong location. NOT_SET is an internal string used to say unconfigured.
Okay. So you must have edited or saved some topics.
[01:21]
foswiki_irc2PlainFile revision directories detected, Migrate your store using tools/bulk_copy.pl.
Any easy way out of this? I am ready to loose all history since there is nothing important
[01:21]
gac410You can just find and delete any directories named *,pfv like Main/AdminGroup,pfv would be the history for edits of the admin group. I think.... .lemme look again [01:23]
foswiki_irc2in the data folder>? [01:24]
gac410Or could also be in pub if you uploaded any attachments.
cd <your install> find . -name "*,pfv"
[01:24]
foswiki_irc2ok found it
./data/System/LdapContrib,pfv
[01:25]
gac410Ah... yeah you installed an extension. [01:25]
foswiki_irc2I dont know how I caused it
I will go ahead and delete it
oh god
yes, I need it
shoudl I not delete it then?
[01:25]
gac410yeah. rm -r ./data/System/LdapContrib,pfv [01:26]
foswiki_irc2my ldap authentication that I so painfully setup? [01:26]
gac410No. It is completely safe to run foswiki without any history. When you install a clean install, there is no history. [01:26]
foswiki_irc2Got it [01:27]
gac410,pfv shows history of changes to the LdapContrib.txt [01:27]
foswiki_irc2thank you! [01:27]
gac410The configuration is in data/LocalSite.cfg THAT file you want to have a good backup on. [01:27]
foswiki_irc2Great! history deleted, warning gone! I have saved config with rcswrap :)
Thank you!
[01:28]
gac410When you migrate the "Main" web. I'd suggest not replacing the files we ship with Main by default. [01:28]
foswiki_irc2I see
just the files that we have in old wiki that are not in new wiki
[01:29]
gac410It's not very many. So copy your Main to Originalmain, then run the charset converter on Originalmain. and last. copy Main/* into Originalmain, and rename it
Actually you can copy our "shippedMain" over your "originalMain" any time. before or after conversion, as we don't ship any non-ascii
The issue with CharsetConverter is if it reads utf-8 as iso, and then tries to convert it again ... double converting utf-8 is bad
[01:30]
foswiki_irc2Thanks a lot gac410!!!!! You are just terrific [01:32]
gac410Hence the run this only once ...(per web) warning [01:32]
foswiki_irc2I am sorry I need to run [01:32]
gac410okay have a nice weekend. [01:32]
foswiki_irc2forget to see the time [01:32]
gac410I know the feeling. [01:32]
foswiki_irc2You have a wonderful weekend!!
bye
