cdotMichaelDaum: which is the best debian package for get solr from? If any? [11:46]
MichaelDaumcdot, none [11:48]
cdottsk. [11:48]
MichaelDaumplease install it like noted in the docu [11:48]
cdoty, no probs, just prefer to use packages if they are an option. [11:48]
MichaelDaumor use ansible ;)
and https://galaxy.ansible.com/geerlingguy/solr/
packages - shackages
I am currently learnign ansible for configuration management.
[11:48]
cdotinteresting. Ansible says "solr 3.5.4" but you say "solr 5.0.0 or later". Another configuration management nightmare! :-( [11:51]
MichaelDaumnot really. ansible lets you set a var and will provision your server accordingly. [11:52]
cdotin general I hate using debian packages, but I hate the alternatives even more. So always looking for something better. [11:52]
MichaelDaumrule of thumb: don't do anything that you cant automate ...
MichaelDaum wished he had followed that rule a long time ago
ansible is the modern puppet or chef replacement
integrates well with vagrant ... in case you'd like to automate creating virtual machines as well
[11:53]
cdoty, we all learn that lesson. automation might be a a bit of a time sink at first, but it pays dividends; so long as you can remember how it works! [11:55]
MichaelDaumjust ordered the oreilly for it
I've spent too much time doing things manual again and again
[11:55]
cdotcdot just re-discovered command-line installation using Foswiki =configure=, and is amazed how well it works. Where did that come from? DId I write it? I can't remember! [11:56]
MichaelDaumhaha
dokuwiki is deep into ansible...using an addon for it called devops
[11:56]
cdotit sounds interesting; will add it to my long list of things to read.
we should do an o'really book on Foswiki some day
[11:57]
