foswiki_irc1I have an Project I wanna realise/finance in foswiki: a QDA-Tool for pdf and foswiki-pages but also for offline. who would be the right person for this?
I was Experimenting many years with Wikis (PMwiki, Wikipedia Wiki, TickiWicki and so on). I got remaind on Foswiki, my preferd one. Now it is on Time to realise a Yderis-"Scientific research" internal and external Portal for Psychology and Psychotherapy. I was researching and speaking with some foswiki-people, find out, Foswiki can do many things, this is superb. My Project and my will is to realise my idea in foswiki: a QDA-T
ed books) and for intern-pages (documentation of patients). I want to realise the following idea: When I am reading books, I am taking notes in the book or outside of the book. Sometimes I have ideas which I write down, or notes about the author, or notes about other things. Now I want, that the book will be in pdf (uniqe signature ISDN), that this book is on my Laptop via Foswiki (Thinkpad x1 yoga Windows 10 it has handwrite
with handwrite recognition) and that I can put different transparent layers on the pdf-book (like a wiki-page with the --for example -- categorie IDEA, AUTHOR, et cetera, and that I can mark quotes and making an assign to the quote. Or I take on the layer IDEA on the pdf-Book-page 34 a note to an sentence/paragraph with assigned note/idea.
The Idea for later is, that I can also use this quotes in other writings on foswiki-pages. Later on I will do all my writings for the yderis.ch company on foswiki and then make the print via Latex-plugin (I think this is also a Project I will support/finance.
Now the particularity should be, that I can do all that above also in offline modus. I like to read the books away from the road and away form internet where I have my peace and taking notes on the book, but now in foswiki.

gac410You might want to review Foswiki:Support.WikiConsultants Probably a bit beyond what I can do. [17:06]
FoswikiBothttps://foswiki.org/Support.WikiConsultants [ WikiConsultants ] [17:06]
foswiki_irc1ok, thanks [17:07]
gac410Also, best to ask during normal European business hours. Several of our consultants are more typically online during those hours. [17:07]
foswiki_irc1thanks, I will consult an wikiconsultant, think that is the best. In here it becomes real technical ;-) once more thanks

[17:11]
foswiki_irc9hello, any developers here? [17:19]
gac410At least one... [17:20]
foswiki_irc9;-) i should have recognized you, gac410. you have helped me before.
now i need to do something and wondering if there's an easy and straightforward way to do it.
[17:21]
gac410whats that? [17:22]
foswiki_irc9i want to have some texts inserted into a page based on some conditions. to be specific, i want to insert the context of a file into a page if this file exists.
context => content
[17:24]
gac410The file lives outside of Foswiki? (ie, not an attachment or another topic file?) [17:24]
foswiki_irc9this file will be created or removed dynamically by the server.
probably i should describe to you the situation and you may suggest to a way.
[17:25]
gac410Do you have control: Where it's created, and it;s name?
If it exists in the data/<Someweb>/TheFile.txt then you can %INCLUDE{"SomeWeb.TheFile"}%
[17:27]
foswiki_irc9i want to add an announcement for a upcoming system maintenance on a page, say, the homepage automatically and dynamically. [17:28]
gac410Hm One way is to set the SitePreferences - BROADCASTMESSAGE somehow. That would put a banner at the top of every page. [17:30]
foswiki_irc9so if i or the system create the file at some specific location, the content of the file will be inserted into the page at a specific location.
if the file is absent, then nothing will be inserted.
[17:30]
gac410Can you create the file in the Foswiki data dir. ie data/Main/OutageMessage.txt They you could %INCLUDE{"Main.OutageMessage" warn="off"}% [17:32]
foswiki_irc9it's okay the message shows on every page.
yes. i can have the file creaeted anywhere on the server.
[17:32]
gac410If Main.OutageMessage exists, then it is included, otherwise its an empty message ... warn=off. [17:33]
foswiki_irc9okay. let me try. thanks. [17:33]
gac410Just tested, it works fine. You could even use it in the BROADCAST message. Main.SitePreferences:
* Set BROADCASTMESSAGE = %INCLUDE{"Main.OutageNotice" warn="off"}%
data/Main/OutageNotice.txt just needs some plain text, no special formatting
[17:36]
foswiki_irc9seems data/Main/OutageMessage.txt has no effect for me [17:38]
gac410Can you view Main.OutageMessage in your reguar URL?
ie data directory is the /var/www/data/Main/OutageMessage.txt ... or wherever your foswiki system is installed.
Topic files are really nothing special. They can have some %META statements, but plain text files are readable by foswiki.
[17:38]
foswiki_irc9the path is /var/www/html/foswiki/data/Main/OutageMessage.txt /var/www/html is the doc root [17:41]
gac410So you should be able to view yoursite.com/Main/OutageMessage (no .txt) [17:42]
foswiki_irc9page not found [17:43]
gac410(or whatever you need for the hostname/url prefix
ls /var/www/html/foswiki/data/Main/ do you see all the other topics there? Registerd users, Web* topics, etc. Could it be permissions, can Foswiki read the file?
(the /data is not part of the URL. )
[17:43]
foswiki_irc9i see all registered user files in /var/www/html/foswiki/data/Main and the WebHome.txt file.
the permission is readable for all
[17:56]
gac410okay, so if you create a file OutageMessage.txt containing a text string "System going down at midnight" They you should be able to view "Main/OutageMessage" as a topic, like any other user topic [17:58]
foswiki_irc9but WebHome.txt is not used as the home page. the page is a file with the same name but in another directory [17:58]
gac410A "web" on foswiki is simply a subdirectory in "...path/to/data/" Only requremet is that it starts with an upper case character, and contain a WebPreferences.txt file.
And a "topic" is a Something.txt file in a web directory. Only requirement is that it start with an upper case character.
I can't understand why a file you create would not be found.
Foswiki data store is very simple, and specifically designed to work with plain text files created outside of foswiki.
hm, unless something like SELinux or other mandatory access controls external to foswiki are blocking access. I really don't know. This usually 'just works'
We have topics on foswiki.org that are generated by cronjobs ... it is pretty normal actually.
[18:00]
foswiki_irc9* Set BROADCASTMESSAGE = %INCLUDE{"Main.OutageNotice" warn="off"}% this seems has effect. i added it in the file WebHome.txt in another directory and the text in the file showed up.
but with a little problem. it also shows * Set BROADCASTMESSAGE =
[18:06]
gac410Are you using the Wysiwyg editor? The * is representing a bullet. You would insert a bullet with Set BROADCASTMESSAGE.
or if using the plaintext editor, then it's 3 spaces and an asterisk
you should really edit other files by using the Foswiki editor. Wysiwyg or Plain Text. And just create/remove your OutageNotice.txt file from outside foswiki.
[18:08]
foswiki_irc9i just manually edited the file and added the line below the META line. with 3 spaces and *, the banner shows up, but the line also shows up at its original position. [18:15]
gac410Ah... yes that's how it works. There are two ways to hide the setting:
1) Use HTMl comments <!-- (next line) * Set ... (next line) -->
2) Use the more topic actions - Edit Settings editor, and put the setting (including the 3 spaces and *) into that editor.
[18:17]
foswiki_irc9@gac410 <!-- ... --> works perfect. thanks a lot for your help. [18:25]
gac410You are welcome. glad it worked. [18:25]
