WhoWhatWhen
gac410What release are you running [00:00]
QBFreakthe RC you recommended [00:00]
gac410it should be already installed. [00:00]
QBFreakFoswiki-2.1.4-RC1
heh
I never even looked...
[00:01]
gac410All of the "bundled" extensions should already be in the release, and they don't show up in the list to install/update if they are already up-to-date
"Review installed extensions" though in configure should show it.
Unless I messed up anyway. ;)
[00:01]
QBFreaknope, I just failed to actually LOOK first [00:02]
gac410Are you planning on upgrading an old foswiki? [00:02]
QBFreakI just upgraded an old TWiki [00:02]
gac410Oh... okay. Did you use CharsetConverterContrib to convert to utf-8 [00:03]
QBFreakI did not, although everything got touched by the bulk importer [00:04]
gac410oh... you used bulk_copy ? I didn't know that would read from a twiki install. [00:04]
QBFreaktwiki -> temp foswiki /w rcs -> foswiki with plainfile
the first step is manual copying of files
[00:04]
gac410Ah,.. okay great. Glad to know that path works [00:05]
QBFreakmuch like upgrading used to be in the olden days :) [00:05]
gac410The charset conversion can be really tricky. Old systems use iso-8859-1 and/or mixture of cp-1252 ... whatever the users happen to cut/paste into topics.
But I think if bulk_copy was able to read the data, you are probably fine.
[00:06]
QBFreakI don't have anything much outside of the "standard" english characters, would charset have been an issue?
that was one of the reasons I wanted to use bulk_copy, besides switching to the default file store
(I figure it's default for a reason)
[00:07]
gac410well if windows user cut/paste, you tend to get smartquotes, alternate bullets, etc. It can get ugly. [00:08]
QBFreakoh, ug, no, I didn't let it do any of that
this was my personal website
[00:08]
gac410okay good. Probably clean then. [00:08]
QBFreakI don't use it for that anymore, but there's still some stuff I wanted to keep up, and my host was emailing me about absurd CPU usage
which means something bad was going on
a release from 2006, I'm sure it had a security issue or two :)
[00:09]
gac410just a few. Is it exposed to the internet? The SemrushBot has been an absolute nightmare. I've seen 2 sites taken down by the workload it generates. [00:10]
QBFreakyeah, it is, although new user creation is disabled and TWikiGuest can't edit anything IIRC
I need to remember to lock TWikiGuest out of the Sandbox
[00:11]
gac410Saw one site where Semrush was something like 80% of their traffic ... Repeatedly fetching *one* topic, sorting every table by every column by every direction. [00:12]
QBFreakugh [00:12]
gac410Whenever someone reports excessive load, now, that's the first thing I look for. What are the (@#*&$ bots doing. [00:13]
QBFreakawstats didn't identify any bots specifically, but it's an equally ancient version
a forgotten cron job that runs every night :)
do you have a recommended robots.txt that allows indexing but cuts down on some of the "dumb" operations?
[00:14]
gac410Not really. We have the old example we ship with foswiki, Take a look at the one on http://foswiki.org/robots.txt as well. We've tuned it a bit.
The bots that seem to cause problems though also don't really honor robots.txt.
[00:20]
QBFreaknaturally :)
ah, cool, at least some will parse this? Disallow: /*?
[00:22]
gac410That's what I've read. [00:23]
QBFreakannoyingly, the standard doesn't actually mention wildcards in the value portion (where the path is) [00:29]
gac410right. That's an extension. Can't remember where I saw it. [00:29]
QBFreakthe comment in your robots.txt mentions googlebot
I was hoping it was more common than that, but oh well :)
[00:29]
gac410The really annoying thing is that the bots treat "nofollow" as "don't index" they still follow the damn links.
I've gone through and set sort="off" on any tables where it's not obviously needed
[00:31]
QBFreakugh [00:32]
gac410And deny WikiGuest on any pages that are high overhead. Also, be sure to deny WikiGuest on the System web. Foswiki should operate just fine now with that restricted
And if you are interested in indexing, "duplicate content" actually reduces the search rank.
[00:33]
QBFreakI haven't looked, can I simply disable WikiGuest? [00:34]
gac410* Set DENYWEBVIEW = WikiGuest which should require login on that web. [00:34]
QBFreakoh, right, WikiGuest is needed to view for non-logged in users
considering I've been using this as an overblown CMS for a personal website, I kinda need that :)
[00:35]
gac410And if you want to allow everyone acces, you can use Set ALLOWTOPICVIEW = * as a wildcard.
(That's one migration requirement. Convert empty DENY rules to ALLOW *. But the upgrade guide should have covered that.
[00:35]
QBFreakI didn't migrate over any Web* topics AFAIK, so I should be OK there
I didn't have any topic-level allow/deny rules
[00:37]
gac410Ah.. .okay [00:37]
QBFreakwell, hmm, I had one web I migrated
looks like all of the empty DENY rules were commented out
[00:38]
looks like there is an empty DENY in Sandbox.WebPreferences: * Set DENYWEBVIEW = [00:45]
gac410hm ... looking [00:45]
QBFreakI just unzipped the RC to get a fresh copy to be sure
well, the tgz, but I'm assuming they came from the same source
[00:46]
gac410Well I'll be damned. Yup - same source. And just looked in git. [00:47]
It's not particularly consequential. It's ignored.
Another fixup for 2.1.4 though. :(
[00:53]
QBFreakit never ends [00:55]
in the _default web, there's a note that says "DENY the WikiGuest user to..." but WikiGuest is a WikiWord and it's not specifically referenced back to %USERSWEB%
errr _default.WebPreferences
[01:01]
gac410okay. I'll look at that too,. Opening a task [01:02]
QBFreakit's in the ---++ Access control section [01:03]
gac410Thanks [01:03]
QBFreaknp [01:03]
gac410Item14392 [01:04]
FoswikiBothttps://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item14392 [ Item14392: Sandbox WebPreferences topic contains an empty DENY rule which is ignored. ] [01:04]
QBFreakon closer inspection, so does _default/WebPreferences [01:06]
gac410Ah... actually this may not be an issue. The Docs in the topic states "Empty settings are ignored" so it's not a functional statement. [01:06]
QBFreakpoint :) [01:07]
gac410So it's just there as an example of the DENY rule if you want to use it. [01:07]
QBFreakit's just an issue for migrations where they might be expecting them to DO something [01:07]
gac410Right. Maybe they should be #Set commented so they are clearly not operational unless specified [01:07]
QBFreakyeah, that's what I did with mine [01:08]

cdothmmm. Most are cosmetic, or only impact devs, so I didn't think it worth pushing them. [14:45]

cdoty, I changed the row numbering a while ago. WHen I originally built the plugin I was thinking in Fortran. It happens on occasion; I even have the punch cards to prove it. [17:11]
gac410gawd... that brings back memories. My first exposure to computers was tfor - 10-statement fortran, punched cards submitted overnight to the college mainframe. [17:14]
