Lynnwoodgac410 - I finally tried the updated ImmediateNotifyPlugin while updating a site to 2.1.4. It looks good so far but I do notice that you removed one of the mechanisms (that i had actually been using) - setting IMMEDIATENOTIFY within indivudual topics.
Other than my needing to re-jigger how I was using that (which I don't think will be a big issue), I curious about any reasons why you made that change.
I could see one: making it more consistent with normal WebNotify functionality.
Actually.... talking a look at what I had implemented, I see why I preferred the IMMEDIATENOTIFY within indivudual topics. I had been asked to create a menu item (part of TopicActions in NatSkin) which would allow user to subscribe to a topic.
It was much easier for me to figure out how to programmatically check and change a preference setting within the base topic than parsing and modifying ImmediateWebNotify topic.
Hmmm...Taking a closer look at the documentation of the updated plugin, it's not clear that it supports subscription to individual topics. It would appear that the only option for email notification is adding one's username to ImmediateWebNotify would enables notificatication for all changes in that web.
[16:54]
In other news.... After updating site from 2.1.3 to 2.1.4, I'm now seeing getting an error in apache log on each topic edit: "Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at /var/www/foswiki/lib/Foswiki/Store/PlainFile.pm line 977."
anyone else seen this? I'm looking now to see what's on that line.
[17:14]
gac410Hi Lynnwood I didn't think I removed anything at all from ImmediateNotifyPlugin. I was more focused on tryinig to make what was documented work.
I'll have to try to figure out what got changed. It may have been accidental.
[17:16]
Lynnwoodhmmm. not sure which version I had been working with previously... i think i how gotten it from git.
And i had to make some changes to get it to work... but i definitely didn't add the IMMEDIATENOTIFY preference part...
[17:18]
gac410There were no changes to PlainFile store since 2.1.0 in 2016 [17:19]
Lynnwoodwell... odd... i wonder what else could be different. [17:20]
gac410Are you sure you are not confusing ImmediateNotifyPlugin with NotificationPlugin? I've not touched ImmediateNotify plugin since Feb 2012 [17:22]
Lynnwoodok. that's the issue. [17:22]
gac410I don't think that the version in git was ever released. [17:22]
LynnwoodI had gotten ImmediateNotifyPlugin working using the git version. [17:23]
gac410NotificationPlugin doesn't use in-topic settings. ImmediateNotifyPlugin did. But I got rather tangled up in the code, and then got distracted..
So if you were using the git version of ImmediateNotifyPlugin, then it should be whatever it was ... not touched.
[17:23]
LynnwoodWhen I updated the site today and reviewed the plugin status, it showed a new version of ImmediateNotifyPlugin and assumed that was the one you had updated - but apparently it was simply referring back to the older released version.
yep... makes sense.
I can't remember why i didn't use NotifyPlugin.
maybe because i couldn't get it to work either... and i was more successful getting immediate notify plugin working.
(at least the SMTP part...)
[17:24]
gac410NotifyPlugin is closer to the MailerContrib - but uses a per-user notify topic. Y, NotifyPluigin was badly broken / incomplete. Harlan did some work on it but got only a subset working. and 2.x broke it. I had to do quiet a bit to get all the features actually working. [17:27]
LynnwoodBut moving forward, that is probably the best horse to bet on.... [17:28]
gac410I figure if you use NotifyPlugin with a large user base, it would get very slow very quickly, needing to read every <user>Notify topic for every save. [17:28]
Lynnwoodright...
In that regard, the use of a IMMEDIATENOTIFY preference setting is a good thing.
[17:29]
gac410Really all 3 of these extensions really need a rewrite into a database backend to track the user <-> topic relationships. The Subscribe/Unsubscribe part of Subscribe plugin/ mailer contrib breaks down with large webnotify topics. ie. our Tasks web [17:30]
LynnwoodIf i'm not mistaken, the way ImmediateNotifyPlugin was designed, it used a single ImmediateWebNotify topic to manage web-wide subscriptions, and then used IMMEDIATENOTIFY to manage individual topic subscriptions.
Yes, Also the Subscribe/Unsubscribe part of Subscribe plugin has some minor issues, iir.
...things related to difficulty in parsing/modifying the individual subscription lists.
[17:31]
gac410y, I don't really remember any more. But anyway, the git version has not changed. the Extensions web version was the original release by Will Norris in 2010. The "Extensions/Testing version was a release I made for someone.
The one bug I'm aware of in SubscribePlugin is if you subscribe to a Web, and unsubscribe to a topic, it can get confused and you never get resubscribed.

FoswikiBothttps://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item13636 [ Item13636: SubscribePlugin fails to resubscribe a topic if already subscribed to entire web ] [17:34]
Lynnwoodsounds right...
This is the one i was remembering: Tasks/Item5949
[17:39]
FoswikiBothttps://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item5949 [ Item5949: SubscribePlugin problem in canceling subscription to single topic. Results in subscribing to all topics in web. ] [17:43]
Lynnwoodvariations on a theme... all related to vagaries of parsing/modifying the text.
all pointing back to your point that this would be better handled by a db.
