bluethundrhi is there an easy (as in "no brainer" easy) way for me to upgrade my twiki to a foswiki? [05:43]
MTempestbluethundr: It depends on what you've done to your twiki ;) If you edited topics in the TWiki web, then it can be tricky. [05:47]
bluethundrnope! it's a pretty simple unmolested twiki install [05:47]
MTempestThe way I did it was to do a fresh install of foswiki (and that can be on the same server), install plugins as needed, and copy (or symlink) the webs that have data.
For the last step - that means content in the pub and data directories, obviously.
[05:48]
bluethundrgotcha. is there a deb package the way there used to be for twiki? [05:52]

MartinKaufmannMTempest: You there?
I read in yesterday's log to you upgraded your old TWiki 4.1.2 directly to Foswiki 1.0.6.
[06:41]
***ktwilight_ has quit IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)) [06:44]
MartinKaufmannI'm planning on doing the same thing and was wondering if you could point out some of the pit falls encountered. [06:44]
MTempestMartinKaufmann:To be precise, I installed 1.0.6 alongside on the same server and symlinked the webs that contain data. [06:44]
MartinKaufmannMTempest: And it works out of the box?
So you just symlinked the pub and data directories of your custom webs? That's it?
[06:45]
MTempestI also copied the .htpasswd file.
And installed plugins.
And then it worked. There were minor issues to sort out, but it ran well enough for people to use day-to-day.
[06:46]
MartinKaufmannDo you use many plugins? Do they work all the same on Foswiki? [06:47]
MTempestI had modified some topics in the TWiki web, and I had to copy those by hand. [06:47]
MartinKaufmannThanks! That sounds quite promissing. [06:47]
MTempestI used a handful of plugins, and most had been ported. I am still addressing issues with seldom-used plugins. In my case, PublishPlugin does not play nicely with DirectedGraphWebMapPlugin and *my* data.
Check http://foswiki.org/Development/StatusOfPortingExtensionsToFoswiki to see which of the TWiki plugins have been ported.
[06:49]
MartinKaufmannMigrating to Foswiki always looked like a rather daunting task to me.
Yes, I checked this page before. Tanks.
s/Tanks/Thanks/
On Debian, is it recommended to use the Debian package or rather the standard install package? Any advantages/disadvantages of one or the other?
[06:50]
MTempestI have used both. Debian installation is easier, but it seems harder to upgrade plugins. I must admit, I didn't try very hard.
I can do a standard install, and I find that works easier for me.
[06:56]
MartinKaufmannOK, I'll stay with the standard install. [06:58]
***Zordrak_ has joined #foswiki [06:59]

***EugenMayer`aw is now known as EugenMayer [07:01]
MartinKaufmannAny recommendations regarding 1.0.5 vs 1.0.6? I'm using Foswiki on the Intranet, so no particular worries about security. [07:02]
MTempestDo you use short urls? [07:02]
pharveyI should chip in and mention that I've been working on migrating to TWiki 4.3.1 to Foswiki 1.0.6 [07:04]
MTempestSeveral people have reported that they could not get 1.0.6 to work. So it would seem that you are more likely to succeed with 1.0.5. That said, 1.0.6 works for me. [07:05]
pharveyOur difficulties stem from directly modified template and css files, TWiki web topics, and (light) usage of some obscure plugins
I have Foswiki running in parallel with the TWiki data and pub directories, and it's worked out great.
I'm taking my time to re-work the whole site and redesign our skin (the proper way) and try to ensure that site customisations we do are done in such a way that they are immune from being obliterated from upgrades
(our 4.2 to 4.3.1 upgrade was a mini nightmare also).
I also use 1.0.6 with ShortURLs, and it seems to work fine.
[07:06]
MartinKaufmannpharvey: Thanks for sharing your experience.
We're customised quite a lot of templates as well.
[07:09]
pharveyMy apache config for ShortURLs is at http://foswiki.org/Support/SSLForNonViewScriptsOnly [07:10]
***Zordrak has quit IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)) [07:10]
MartinKaufmannBut most changes are not crucial. If they don't survive, we can live with it. [07:11]
pharveyIt's fine to have customised templates and css files, but there are "good" ways of doing things that will survive upgrades :) [07:12]
MTempestYou may find that there are much better ways to do those customisations now, compared to 4.1.2 :)
snap :)
[07:12]
MartinKaufmannHow is Foswiki customised?
Is anyone using rewrite rules to be able to still use old TWiki links on a Foswiki system?
[07:14]
EugenMayerMartinKaufmann: yes we had those on f.o
Good morning folks
[07:15]
MTempestMoin [07:15]
EugenMayerpharvey: i dont think customazing templates is that easy at all :)
pharvey: one main gap yet is the biggest problem, that you can concatenate template definitions
so if a template has an "TMPL:DEF{'css'}
you can write something to extend it..you have to redefine it
but as you never know what is inside..you just broke your upstream support :)
s/can/cant
[07:15]
pharveyWell yes, templates aren't that easy to extend, but you can take steps to make it easier.
In our case we had directly modified the *.pattern.tmpl files
Obviously in that case upgrades will be catastrophic :)
[07:20]
MartinKaufmannEugenMayer: Are the rewrite rules documented somewhere? [07:20]

the grean backgroud box is rolling over the navigation

what comes down to your totaly broken CSS :)
padding-left:15em;
thats not the way how you simulate floating :)
make #main floating

maybe i should just use a left margin instead of padding..

gmcbut then the text wraps to the left after the webleftbar ends
wait
[09:12]
EugenMayeryou need to set a width otherwise the browser will stretch it to the maximum width, which is the browser width..what then means
it can float arround the navbar
[09:12]

pharveyCDot: Hi there. I wanted to get your thoughts on how you see SafeWikiPlugin influencing the way we generally implement extensions and JS in the rest of the project? [12:35]
CDotpharvey: fire away. Will answer as I can. [12:36]
pharveyIs SafeWikiPlugin just an experiment at this stage? Or do you see in 12-24 months time, that most commonly used plugins should be compatible with it?
I would like to help tweaking everything to make SafeWikiPlugin as painless as possible. But if there is little interest for this work, then I can put my efforts elsewhere.
As an aside, I am constantly reminded about the lack of ability to have anonymous commenting on our wiki.
[12:37]
CDotit was never an experiment; I intended it to be useable. [12:40]
pharveyCool. Well that makes me happy. [12:40]
CDotI had originally hoped to get some help with it, and with plugin compatibility, but that never materialised
there was a bit of a "you wrote SWP so compatibility is your problem" attitude :-(
[12:40]
pharveyI see. Well that's unfortunate. [12:41]
CDotI see it as an important security engine, myself. [12:41]
pharveyIncidentally there's an important bug about default SafeURIs... [12:41]
CDotthe one relating to getScriptUrlPath? [12:42]
pharveyTask:1963
One can just attach their nasty js to a topic
Tasks:1963
Ah, there's a bot asleep?
:)
[12:42]
CDotok, I see. Well, you can't strip <script> tags
they may have been put there by a plugin
[12:44]
pharveyshouldn't they be using addToHEAD()? [12:45]
CDotoh, fromthe bodty. I though it did do that? I guess not.
yes, plugins should always add tot he head
hmmm, that ATTACHURLPATH one is a bit of a nasty
as that is the mechanism by which most plugins embed JS
[12:45]
pharveyan easy fix is to just have the pub/System path instead of the whole site root
in SafeURIs
[12:46]
CDotah, but not in the body. So why isn't it stripping <script from the body? I'm pretty sure it's supposed to....
hmmm, no. I must have decided URI filtering was good enough; but this shows it isn't
somehow we want to allow %ATACHURLPATH% when used in the HEAD, but filter it in the BODY
or, as you suggest, filter <script tags completely
[12:47]
pharvey%ATTACHURLPATH%/%SYSTEMWEB% could be a compromise
I'd be happy to strip <script> and <style> from the body, but that's me :)
[12:50]
CDotI don't like compromises; they tend to store up problems for later
ATM the generator doesn't distinguish between "script in head" and "script in body"
[12:51]
pharveyI see [12:52]
CDotthough it should be simple enough to add that
oh wait; that was because there is already a filter
$Foswiki::cfg{AllowInlineScript} or somesuch
[12:52]
pharveyHmm, I didn't know about that one [12:53]
CDotit was prexisting [12:53]
pharveyIt's not in my LocalSIte.cfg
Also, perhaps SafeWikiPlugin could issue warnings if INCLUDE is permitted to do ../ or URL includes
But then, maybe that's just annoying :)
[12:54]
CDot# **BOOLEAN**
# Allow the use of SCRIPT and LITERAL tags in topics. If this is disabled,
# all SCRIPT and LITERAL sections will be removed from the body of topics.
# Note that this may prevent some plugins from functioning correctly.
$Foswiki::cfg{AllowInlineScript} = $TRUE;
I'm against the idea of issuing warnings; I think SafeWikiPlugin should be as light as possible
I'd prefer to cross-reference the doc more thoroughly, if that's necessary
[12:59]
pharveyOk. I haven't looked at how flexible configure is. Can a plugin issue a warning from configure? [13:01]
CDotyes, a plugin can install a Checker [13:01]
***MichaelDaum has joined #foswiki [13:01]
CDotsee the checkers in lib/Foswiki/Configure/Checkers [13:02]
pharveyCool. I think that would be valuable. I'll see if I can do it. [13:03]
***D-Boy` has joined #foswiki [13:03]
pharveySo I propose warning from configure if the config allows URL includes, or script tags in body. [13:05]
CDotok [13:06]
pharveyI'll change Item1963 [13:06]
CDotpharvey: I think we should implement a mechanism to support different filtering in HEAD and BODY
and filter <script. I don't want to be reliant on {AllowInlineScript}
it uses a regex, and TBH I don't trust it
[13:07]
pharveyCool. I'll let you raise a different task for implementing a <script filter? I can probably handle adding a configure checker as a learning exercise. [13:11]

tml2html is done as a REST handler, and does not use the conventional HTML rendering engine
[13:21]
pharveyI see. I had some crazy issues which made it appear that SafeWikiPlugin had interfered. But now that our templates seem to produce better validating XHTML things have settled down.
Also I have some unorthodox rewrite rules so everything except our view script is run over SSL, so it gets tricky to isolate problems...
[13:25]
CDotpharvey: http://foswiki.org/Tasks/Item8256
yeah, rewrite rules make life...... interesting
[13:27]
pharveyExcellent, thankyou. [13:28]
***MichaelDaum has quit IRC (Remote closed the connection) [13:28]
pharveyI wonder if all the rewrite hacks could be simplified with a plugin...
Certainly it would be nice if links to bin/view/Web/Topic could be rendered as /Web/Topic (or whatever the ShortURL scheme).
If clients have a requirement for SSL, how do you make performance acceptable? mod_headers and cache expire directives to force SSL'd content to be cached by the browser? Does this work for all browsers?

QUERYPARAMS calls expandStandardEscapes, which converts $percnt to % in the text to be saved.

CDotI would say the validate template should change [15:09]
MTempestI.e. change the template to use "safe" encoding and add $ to the "safe" encoding? [15:12]
CDotTBH I'm not sure why QUERYPARAMS calls expandStandardEscapes
that would seem to run counter to it's intent
without looking at all other uses of it, it's hard to be sure, though.
[15:15]
OK, I looked at the usages. Seems to me that QUERYPARAMS should *not* call expandStandardEscapes()
I can't think of a case where that would be useful.
[15:24]
MTempestI was coming to the same conclusion [15:25]
CDotI do *not* think $ should be added to the "safe" encoding.
the main purpose of QUERYPARAMS is to pass on parameters verbatim. To do that, it should not be expanding the standard escapes.
though all of the templates that use it will have to be thoroughly tested.
Another alternative would be to add a nostdescapes="on" parameter
stdescapes="off" I mean
that would maintain forward compatibility for other templates

MTempestCDot: Thank you. Now I can carry on :) [16:37]
CDotMTempest: so what are you going to do? stdescapes=? [16:38]
MTempestYes, stdescapes [16:38]
CDotit has a horrible feel to it, but I can't think of a better approach :-(
short of changing the spec of QUERYPARAMS, that is.
[16:40]
MTempestVarQUERYPARAMS does not say that standard escapes are expanded. Is there any other spec? [16:42]
CDotno, that's it.
apart from the unit tests, of course
[16:50]
MTempestWow - QUERYPARAMS has expanded standard escapes since 4.1.2 (or earlier). This goes way back. [16:53]

MTempestThe unit tests do not use any standard escapes. [17:25]
CDotMTempest: I added it back in 4.1.2
there should be a feature request on (tm)wiki.org
[17:30]
MTempestCan you remember why? [17:30]
CDotyeah, I added it as an analog to QUERYSTRING, so that long params can be passed in <input type=""
cos QUERYSTRING was inherently limited to the maximum URL length
[17:31]
MTempestI looked, but I don't see a feature request. I see EasyUrlQueryHandling, but that was parked. [17:34]
***TJCRI has joined #foswiki [17:35]
CDotmaybe it predated feature requests
or maybe I just didn't bother :-/
[17:35]
MTempestQUERYPARAMS is only used for forms that forward parameters from the request.
It could be used as a debugging tool.
MTempest wonders how to use it so that expanding escapes is a feature
[17:38]
CDotMTempest: part of me says that, given that it's undocument, just silently remove that "feature" - even classify it as a bug
in fact, most of me says that, now, thinking about it.
[17:41]
MTempestThe only uses I can come up with are very hackish, and remind me of SpreadSheetPlugin programming. Ick.
I'll remove the expanding of standard escapes.

TJCRIlike to have it sent to the admin group? so all members of that group receive the email notification? [17:49]
MTempestTJCRI: You could set up a mailing list, and have foswiki send the notification email to the mailing list. [17:55]
CDotTJCRI: if you are using the default user mapping, then anyone who has added themselves to WebNotify in the Main web will be notified when personal topics are created.
